Hi everyone,

I recently tried to apply some noise inside the gradient map filter with Affinity photo (and designer as well). I wanted to create a duotone image with some noise only on one of the two colours. But unfortunately the noise ist not visible.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a sample photo
  2. Apply gradient map from inside the layer adjustments
  3. Click on one of the two colours and shift the noise control to the right

The expected behaviour is a noise effect on the blue parts of the image. Instead moving the noise control does not seem to have any effect on the image. However the gradient map control panel shows a noise within the blue part of the gradient (see screenshot).

As a workaround I had to use the colour or tonal selection and apply a noise filter above. But that doesn't give me the exact effect that I want. Would be great to have that working.

I'm using Affinity 2 (both photo and designer) on Windows 11. I also tried it with Affinity 1 on MacOS, but it's not working either.

Thanks for your help!

Same here... The noise is visible in the Gradient Map tool box but does not apply to the image.

I think it has been reported before in V1, and Affinity confirmed that color noise gets ignored for any gradient (fill, layer fx, overlay map)

Possible workarounds:

  • apply noise as separate layer filter layer
  • Create a bitmap file with noise, add a gradient on alpha, and play with blend modes.

Hi @mattmanner,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

Thanks for your report and our sincerest apologies for the delayed response here. We are exceptionally busy following the release of V2 and we thank you for your continued patience and understanding here.

I have been able to replicate this issue here and I'm getting it logged with our developers now - though I don't believe that these adjustments support noise, so I suspect the noise option should not appear here, which is the bug.

This is a separate issue, whereby the FX gradient overlay on iPad does not offer a Noise option, where it does on the desktop.

I hope this helps!

The noise slider in the Gradient color picker only doesn't work for the swatches picker. If you switch to a different color picker, like HSL, RGB, the noise slider does work!

Tested this in Version 2.4.2 in Mac OS (Intel)

Thanks for your report @Jorict!

I've been able to replicate this and therefore have logged this with our development team to be addressed in a future update.

I hope this helps :)
