Affinity Photo V2 - Cursor Arrow Showing when Brush Tool Selected.

Recommended Posts

I also see this behavior across at least the paint, pixel, and erase brush tools. This is different than what Affinity 1's behavior is, which I tested against at the same time. The outer circle representing the brush (not the crosshair) also looks to respond differently. In Affinity 1, the outer circle stays present when the mouse/trackpad/pen is pressed, while in Affinity 2 this circle disappears when pressing/clicking.

I'm unfortunately not seeing a way to toggle these behaviors (if there were an option, I would expect it to be alongside "Show Brush Previews" and "Always Show Brush Crosshair" in the User Interface settings). This feels like a bug, or at least an oversight in the new version.

Yes, and it happens in both Photo V2 and Designer V2 as well as Publisher V2.  I looked at the preferences to see if there was a toggle, but there is nothing.

It really throws me off when it switches to the arrow icon and destroys the feel/flow of drawing.

Affinity Photo/Designer V1 both do not have this issue, and drawing is a smooth experience in both of those programs.

Anyone at Affinity know if this will be addressed in the next update?  Seems like something that was simply overlooked.  It's a small detail, but it makes an enormous difference for artists using your software.

Personally, I use the brush tool to draw 8-10 hours per day and this specific issue causes a mental pause each time it happens, and takes me out of the mindset of drawing and into the mindset of, "how do I fix this?"  It's at the point I've been choosing to work in Clip Studio Paint rather than Affinity until this issue is resolved because it's so distracting to me and my workflow.

Hello, I just upgraded from V1 to V2, and i am also having this problem :(  has there been a solution to this? Because i really need to see my brush size circle instead of the crosshair pointer. It's kinda disappointing if this still hasn't been resolved, since i bought the upgrade and the comments here are still from last december 2022. :( Hope this has a fix!

Welcome to the forum. This should be fixed in the latest 2.0.4 build. Make sure you have the latest update installed and see if the issue continues.

I'm having the same problem on Windows 10 64. In my case it goes from the regular circular brush to a crosshair regardless of the brush's size in pixels.
Really hard to work since it affects many areas at once and I never know what the brush is affecting.
I have build 2.0.4. Thanks

This thread is related to macOS and not Windows. The issue you have seems to be covered here:

Has this issue been addressed? Happening for me with latest version OSX/AD2.

This should be fixed. If you're still having this issue in 2.1.1, please start a new Bug Report thread and provide as much information as possible and we'll take a look.

Welcome to the forums @VernaH

I would say that it’s probably unlikely that any existing problems with the V1 software will be fixed unless they are ‘accidentally’ fixed if/when the software is updated to keep it working with future operating system changes (which may never happen).

I would say that V1 users would be best-off not expecting any problems in that software to be fixed, and plan accordingly.

Am using 1.10.6. and I have the same problem with paint brush turning to cross hairs. Is this going to be fixed in the V1 or is it no longer being supported. I don't want to pay again to upgrade to V2.

This has been fixed for me.  I would recommend upgrading to V2 if you're still using V1.  Though I've been using Clip Studio Paint recently for most of my work (CSP has a better brush engine that is lightyears ahead of Affinity), V2 seems to be quite stable now for the projects I do use it for.
