lesleyb: It is normally better if you make the title of your thread something specific to your question, such as “How do I crop images?” rather than something vague like “basic tools for a newbie”. This makes it easier for forum members to see what the thread is about.

Also, it’s usually best to tell us which Affinity application(s) you are working in (and/or have access to), and which Persona you are using, as each has different functionalities and the methods used in each may differ.

No harm done, all’s fine here, but without some basic information it’s often difficult for us to know where to start answering the question.

Edit: Added italicised text to second paragraph.

The second thread from OP concerns APublisher - so Photo Persona? Crop Tool?

Hi @lesleyb,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

As your first post is regarding Affinity Publisher, I assume you are using this application - though please do correct me if I'm wrong.

You can find the Vector Crop tool in the left hand toolbar, as highlighted below -

I hope this helps :)

yes, thank you, i found the tool but i cant get it to do anything other than make a shape, then when i release the mouse it all disappears.  it keeps telling me i have selected Curve tool, i havent selected anything and i cant see where i can select or deselect.  tbh i am thinking this is all too complicated for my simple requirements!  i do so miss my old Pageplus programme!

Sorry to hear this, though I'm a little confused of the behaviour you're describing. You can find information on using the crop tool here - https://affinity.help/publisher/English.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Tools/tools_crop.html?title=Vector Crop Tool

You need to select the layer/object you wish to crop using the Move Tool, then with this layer selected initialise the Crop Tool, and you can then drag the handles to crop the layer -

If you're still having trouble, could you provide a screen recording showing the steps you're taking?

If you're unsure how to take a screen recording, please check out our FAQ linked below -

Don't want to provide screenshots or video of what you're doing? This would make it easier for you to help.

What specifically says you have selected a "Curve tool"? AFAIK, there is no tool in the Tools panel by that name.

If you are using the Vector Crop Tool then like @Dan C said, you need to first select an object to use this tool with.

Try to provide information (screenshot, video) about the procedure you will perform in PagePlus, which you know.
It will then be easy for users to find how to do the same in Affinity.
