Hi,

Is there any advantage of starting with my raw files from my Olympus camera when editing if the JPEG image is already correctly exposed, white balance is correct etc ? As I find I'll edit a bit of the raw file the move it straight to the photo persona for the majority of the edit sometimes doing what I've already done in the develope persona ?

When I click on develope in the develope persona and it goes to the photo persona is it still an Olympus raw file or now converted to something else ?

Thanks.

It has been developed into a usable image. See https://affinityspotlight.com/article/raw-actually/ for a complete explanation of what a RAW format file really is & why it must be developed.

If "correct" means "what I want", then probably not.  If I'm taking pictures to show the kids what their parents have been up to then JPEGs are fine - I'm making memory joggers rather than art (I wish!!).  Mostly though I'm taking pictures because I enjoy the process of trying to produce a pleasing image, and that means being picky about how much of what I do and where I do it.  JPEGs have already been processed according to rules defined by the camera and a lot of the original data has been thrown away - I've lost control before I've even started.  Very often my eyes and my memory gang up on me - the sunset colours were more intense, the shadows weren't that dark and the whole scene was warmer.  And where did those telephone lines come from?  I can fix those in post, but the more data I've got the better my chances of doing a satisfactory job, so I shoot in RAW rather than JPEG.

It is now an affinity image. That's still not a jpeg though. In develop mode, go to View->Assistent manager (or click the tuxedo icon in the top bar) and it'll tell you the raw output format. if I recall correctly, the default is RGB (16 bit). So that means that once you click that Develop button, it's a 16 bit image. Regular image formats are 8 Bit so you still have a tonload more information to work with than with your regular Olympus jpeg image.

There is nothing wrong with just clicking the develop button and doing everything in Photo mode. Develop mode is destructive. you can't change it anymore.
In Photo mode you can do (almost) everything non-destructively so I too do most of the stuff in Photo mode. Don't feel bad about it. you just HAVE to develop the RAW because you can't work with a RAW image in Photo mode. Bit of a shame really but it is what it is..
