Affinity Photo Not Responding

Recommended Posts

Affinity Photo Not Responding - I get this every few days, it happens suddenly, and I've waited up to an hour, it never responds, and I have to close the program, losing my work if I haven't saved it yet. Sometimes the program when reopened will have the unsaved file, which is a great feature.

  1. Are you using the latest release version? Yes, 1.9.2.1035
  2. Can you reproduce it? No, it happens every couple of days, just out of the blue.
(if you cannot then we may struggle to also, making it even harder to fix) -yep, that is true.
  3. Does it happen for a new document? If not do you have a document you can share that shows the problem? No, it happens while I am working on a document. See attached screenshot
  4. If you cannot provide a sample document then please give an accurate description of the problem for example it should include most of the following:
  •    What is your operating system and version (Windows 10, OSX Mojave, iOS 12 etc)? Windows 10
  •    What happened for you (and what you expected to happen) See above
  •    Provide a recipe for creating the problem (step-by-step what you did). Can't do that, sorry.
  •    Screenshots (very handy) or a screen capture/video. See attached.
  •    Any unusual hardware (like tablets or external monitors or drives that may affect things) or relevant other applications like font managers or display managers. I do have an external drive, a 2 TB Passport external drive via USB.  My graphics card details and system info are attached.
  •    Did this same thing used to work and if so have you changed anything recently? (software or hardware) Just started maybe three months ago, seems more frequent now. I uninstalled, downloaded a fresh version and reinstalled Affinity photo two days ago. I haven't added or changed anything else recently.

  • 3 weeks later...

i have the same problem since I downloaded the newest version only that it happens almost every day. Not with every pic but very often.  Never happened before. I deinstalled and installed again. Same thing happened. Friend of mine thinks the new version does not agree with my computer and that I have to change some parameter. But I don't know what.

I have been having exactly the same issue...if Affinity was left open and then returned to a few hours later anything I tried to do was "not responding" and this often led to my whole computer freezing. So, I have just tried what has been suggested above and hopefully this will have cured this very irritating problem.

I wonder if this is the same problem (blue for same answers).

  1. Are you using the latest release version? V1.9.2
Windows 10 fully patched. 10.0.19042
  •    What happened for you (and what you expected to happen) See above
  •    Provide a recipe for creating the problem (step-by-step what you did). I think it may be related to leaving the machine for a long time and/or putting the machine to sleep.
  •    Screenshots (very handy) or a screen capture/video. See attached.
  •    Any unusual hardware (like tablets or external monitors or drives that may affect things) or relevant other applications like font managers or display managers. Nothing unusual, it is a powerful machine with 32Gb memory and a high res screen.
  •    Did this same thing used to work and if so have you changed anything recently? (software or hardware) Only with the latest release, never had it before.

First two Images show a weird thing that happened when I clicked on HSL to switch colours. it changed the Layer display as though the mouse was somewhere else. Nothing happened to the HSL drop down. Then I click on the Image tab to bring up "Rendered Elevation" it does this correctly BUT when I click on the second tab to bring up "main Bricks" it shows the right image, but the greyed tab is still "Rendered Elevation". I can't do anything to change the grey state, but I can change tabs. HOWEVER the menu items seem t work in reverse, i.e. if I click on any of them they go grey, but no drop down appears, so the menus are useless. Last image is a shot of Task Manager, nothing particularly seems to be going on.

.afphoto files are approx 90Mb so not huge for this machine.

THEN...if I use my keyboard to save one of the images with Ctrl-S, that all works fine and asks me to name the file, appears to save it correctly, but actually saves it in a different directory to the one I selected!!! BUT it seems to have unblocked the problem. The menus now work correctly, Ctrl-S chooses the right folder, and the tabs start going grey again.

Sorry, I can't give you much more except to say that last time it happened Ctrl-S seemed to fix it as well, but I didn't have precision on what exactly was happening, so this time I thought I'd try to record more.
