I feel like this is a simple operation that I'm just not seeing...I have a color document in AD that has a placed image in it. That image is color, and I'm trying to convert it to b/w. When I try to do it via the Adjustments panel it adjusts my entire project instead of only the placed image (I only have the placed image layer selected).

What is the right way to do this?

To restrict the effect of the adjustment, either nest it to the target layer or group it as shown below. (The grouping method makes it easy to apply the adjustment to multiple layers if desired.)

Also of possible interest, the Assistant Manager (View > Assistant Manager) has a setting that controls whether new adjustment layers are added above the current layer, or as a child:

Adjustment layers affect all layers below them (unless nested, as Alfred suggested). In case you don’t know, you nest adjustments by dragging the adjustment over the layer you want adjusted and when you see the blue line, let go of the adjustment layer. Alternatively, select the two layers and tap the jigsaw icon to group those two layers. Adjustments stay with the group but effect every layer below them within that group. Have fun experimenting😁

On iPad, the Assistant screen is accessed via the Document menu:

For some reason the terminology isn’t consistent between the desktop and iPad versions:

Thanks! I actually got there via gear icon on the main project screen. Glad to be able to change that!
