Afternoon folks

I would like to colour pop the attached photo with the idea of the 2 rings being in colour and the background black+white.I,m ok with doing one object but still being a bit of a newbie if someone may be able to explain how the 2 can be done.

Many thanks

In that case, you just need to convert two objects into one! ;)

If you put a white shape on top of one of the rings to cover it, the ‘Rasterize to Mask’ command will hide everything except the selected ring. So if you put a white shape on top of each of the rings to cover them and then Boolean ‘Add’ the two shapes, the ‘Rasterize to Mask’ command will hide everything except the two rings. Then all you need is a copy of the original image on a layer below, with a ‘Black & White’ adjustment applied.

Or even simpler...

  1. Add a black and white adjustment filter and adjust the black and white to suit
  2. With the filter layer still selected, use a basic brush set to black and paint the colour back in.

Step 2 basically masks part of the black and white adjustment.

There are always multiple workflows to achieve a result in AF. I would create two masks - one for the rings and one for the hands. These are the inverse of each other, so mask the rings then invert that for the hands less the rings. There are multiple ways to create the rink mask. Most common is probably the selection brush, but that is a bit difficult here due to lack of contrast. More advanced I realize, but I used the pen tool and created a selection for each ring, combined those using channels, then created the masks from the combined selection. Then I duplicated your image. I applied the ring mask to the second copy and ADDED that layer to the original at 50% opacity to make the rings pop. Then I applied two adjustments to the hands; black & white followed by recolor for a slight sepia tone. I did this as a group so I could used the hands mask (excludes the rings) to both adjustments. Finally I added a vignette to further focus the rings. I am between a beginner and an intermediate AF user. Others could certainly offer different approaches and results. GL and welcome!
