Just got hold of the 'offer' version on advice from a keen user after struggling to set simple poetry in Microsoft Publisher. Not a good idea.

The tutorials i have studied  are vague and verbose. Need an 'Affinity for Dummies' .

Text boxes.: Why does text set above and below the text-box ? Not inside the box. Copy from word and publisher files drops inside the box but that's a long way round.

Nothing in the tutorials helps me.

I am not trying to produce anything sophisticated but I do need a simpler set up.

Hi and welcome to the forums @Peter Griffiths,

This may be due to a baseline shift in a character panel or could be something else. Select some of the text and see what the numbers are for the baseline shift1692864560_ScreenShot2020-08-27at7_42_54AM.png.eaa0079015d95ed88d63e766bfde9b8b.png.

An eye (Egyptian style) appears bottom right next to the box. next to a red arrow/pointer

I can reorder the lines of a headline by setting a single line and then squeezing the box.....sorry not very technical......but that does not make for any typesetting finesse.

ps thanks for taking the time

The menu Text > Show Special Characters may be useful.

For example, one possibility is that each line is a separate paragraph (look for a paragraph symbol after the first line), and perhaps the "Space after Paragraph" setting in your text style is too big. Or, you might even have an extra blank line (or more) between the two visible lines.

The red eye symbol shows when you have text overflowing a text box and no longer visible.

The eye shows up to indicate that there is more text which will not fit in the box. If you click on it a red line will go through it to turn off the extra text, in this case it is the words "BY DAVID COLLINS".  The red arrow/pointer is for linking the extra text (Overflow text) to a new or different text frame,

I would set up a Headline Paragraph Style and a Byline Paragraph Style. I would have the headline with some space after it and the Byline with a smaller font size.

If you want to have a two line paragraph for the headline (happens a lot) then use Shift + Return to put in a line break instead of Return only.
