Unable to open transparent png

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I have a png of a water drop with a transparent background that I want to use in my logo, but when I open the water drop, the "checkered" background is imported at the background for the image. I can't seem to figure out how to open the file so it recognizes the transparent background. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help. 🙂

Try to link the PNG file, but I think the chessboard is part of it (deleting it won't be easy, because PNG doesn't have layers that can be easily turned off/erase). Or is it a chessboard displayed by Affinity instead of a transparent background? Try inserting an object (eg Fill layer) under the image.

The checkered image is just that an image, a pixel image, the checkerboard that represents the transparency is actually not transparent but white and grey squares.

I assume you copied the image from the internet. Many times we search for images and add the extension .png to find those that are transparent, but the image, although it has that extension, is not really transparent. Don't think twice, the image is not transparent and the checkerboard background is part of that image. This is not your or Affinity's mistake.

On top of the advice above, this sort of thing can happen if you “download” an image from a website incorrectly.
Sometimes, when an image with transparency is displayed on a website (e.g. a stock images site), the image is shown on the page with the chequerboard to show you that the original image has transparency. If you try to save that image directly from the page – by right-click and Save, or some other similar method – what you will get is the image including the chequerboard (the displayed image). The correct method is to use the ‘download’ button (or whatever option is offered) on the page to get the original image rather than the one you are shown on the page.
