HeadStart
This has got to be so simple, but it's defeated me: I'm trying to draw a straight line on a blank part of the page. Using the pen tool and constraining it with the shift key pressed, I can get the perfect line. But how do I get it to stay there? How do I tell it I've finished? At the moment, as soon as I select another tool, or in fact do anything else, my nice straight line just vanishes. š Phil PS. Staff MEB Posted May 5, 2020 Staff Share Posted May 5, 2020 HiĀ HeadStart, Welcome to affinity Forums The line probably doesn't have a stroke width. Select the line object/layer in the Layers panel (since you can see it on canvas currently) and give it a stroke width clicking the stroke width dropdown in the context toolbar. G13RL
Did you put a color and a thickness to the line?
HeadStart
Thanks all. It turned out that I needed to select "Line mode". Did that and hey presto all is well.Ā Ā Phil
Staff MEB Posted May 5, 2020 Staff Share Posted May 5, 2020 HiĀ HeadStart, Unless i'm misunderstanding something changing to Line mode shouldn't make any difference. Maybe i've misunderstood your first post? Anyway i'm glad you have sorted it out. G13RL, You don't need to set theĀ stroke colour andĀ width. Setting one of them is enough to turn the line visible. HeadStart
I think it will have to remain one of life's little mysteries. "Leave well alone" springs to mind, so that's what I'll do. Perhaps when I've got the time I'll delve deeper into the whole applicationĀ and learn a lot more about it. Thanks again
G13RL
@MEB, for me if one of the two parameters is null, the line is invisible. Ā

juliang
this puzzled me Turns out there is a simple answer. When you select the Pen tool the line width is zero. Increasing the line width makes it stay. Easy to say this a beginners mistake. But I suggest a zero line width is a special case and as such this should not be the default condition. Why not make the default width say 10.Ā The pen tool is a tool that for a beginner takes some understanding. Anything to make it easier would be welcome.
