Hello everyone,

I am having a bit of a hard time with one of my designs. I am looking to place a line through some text and then subtract the line and part of the text the line covers. In the design that I have attached, it looks as though I achieve it but all i have done is make the line the same color as the background so it looks as though its disappeared. My issue is that I am using the design for a shirt and don't want the line to be completely gone so it doesn't get transferred over and printed on through the printing process.

I will attach the file as well as some images explaining:

Here is my design and the line I am speaking about is the black line through the word "FRONT". I want to keep the gold line in front of the text but want the Front text to have the line run through it so it cuts the text in half.

This is what happens when I remove the back ground layer. I would like to have the black line removed as well as the sections of text where it overlaps so the word front is cut in half and where the line was, is now transparent:

I have tried to select the layers then go into the layers tab and select geometry then hit "Subtract" and it deletes the whole text except the "F" which is just an outline (see image below) so I don't know if that is the best method for this requirement:

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help with this! I have also added the design file.

To subtract the line from an object, the line's stroke must first be converted to a narrow rectangular Curve object by Layer > Expand Stroke.

Holding down opt/alt key while clicking a Boolean command button (or when selecting the command in Layer > Geometry menu) will create a non-destructive Compound whose components can be edited at any time later.

Attached document contains a Compound containing text and narrow rectangle: compound containing text object.afdesign

The Compound initially had no fill colour, although it should have inherited the white fill of the text, but that was solved by simply giving it white for fill colour.

I do not know if this would help you in this case, but quite handy function is Blend mode Erase, which with the use of Groups can produce interesting effects of this type.

I think it’s worth pointing out (as is often done to me) that the Erase Blend Mode, as mentioned by Pšenda above, doesn’t work with all Export file formats, may give rasterized results when used with certain export formats e.g. SVG.
Check that what you are using will export how you want it to as early as you can to avoid further problems.

Although the OP may not be interested at all, it is necessary to point out that this is not true :-)

Of course, vector export "works", but rasterization can occur (as for many other reasons).
