jeniberry Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I haven't purchased Affinity yet, because I'm looking for a program that can handle PSD files, and most importantly smart objects. I only use Photoshop for this and i wish to switch to another program. Could Affinity work for me? Quote
Staff MEB Posted December 18, 2019 Staff Posted December 18, 2019 Hi jeniberry, Welcome to Affinity Forums Currently (as of v1.7) Affinity apps don't support PSD's smart objects. They are rasterised (flattened) on import and appear as a regular pixel layer in Affinity. There may be improvements for the upcoming v1.8 though. Keep an eye on it. Ranz Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 Yes please allow Smart Object support! As it is, all my Mock-ups are unusable... this should be a MAJOR feature and make many people convert to Affinity Photo from Photoshop. Quote
Sean255 Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 +1 for smart objects...I get thrown all kinds of files from different sources and some people are using smart objects/vector smart objects heavily...at present I have to jump back into PS/Ai...unless anyone knows a workaround??? Quote

The latest customer beta of Affinity Photo (version 1.8.0.164, for macOS) adds PSD smart object import support. I don't think this feature has been rolled out to the PC beta yet. I'm not in a position to test it myself, and I would guess it's a work in progress, but it might be worth a try... You can run the beta in parallel with your installed version, it doesn't replace it. The Mac 164 beta includes an "Import PSD smart objects where possible" option in Preferences > General that must be enabled for this feature to work. I have done only very limited testing with a few PSD template files downloaded from the web (like with the second iPad Pro mockup item here), but it seems to work more or less OK -- smart objects are imported as embedded documents & can be edited in the usual way via the contextual menu "Edit Document" button. h_d 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.5.7 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7

I can’t see this option on the iPad, other than importing smart objects, I can’t see anything that can be done with them that 1.7 can’t do??? Quote

Widestone Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 This option is available also in the newest PC beta 1.8.0..555 Quote
Widestone Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 ...but seems not working. (My Smart objects are only imported and decreased png-layers) The layers are not in the Layers Panel of AP. Quote

I can find no mention of "smart objects" in the list of fixes on the download page. Widestone Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 An option in the settings implies for me the functionality of this option. Quote
