I haven't purchased Affinity yet, because I'm looking for a program that can handle PSD files, and most importantly smart objects. I only use Photoshop for this and i wish to switch to another program. Could Affinity work for me?

Hi jeniberry,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Currently (as of v1.7) Affinity apps don't support PSD's smart objects. They are rasterised (flattened) on import and appear as a regular pixel layer in Affinity. There may be improvements for the upcoming v1.8 though. Keep an eye on it.

Yes please allow Smart Object support! As it is, all my Mock-ups are unusable... this should be a MAJOR feature and make many people convert to Affinity Photo from Photoshop.

+1 for smart objects...I get thrown all kinds of files from different sources and some people are using smart objects/vector smart objects heavily...at present I have to jump back into PS/Ai...unless anyone knows a workaround???  :(

Hi @Sean255 and welcome to the forums!

The latest customer beta of Affinity Photo (version 1.8.0.164, for macOS) adds PSD smart object import support. I don't think this feature has been rolled out to the PC beta yet.

I'm not in a position to test it myself, and I would guess it's a work in progress, but it might be worth a try... You can run the beta in parallel with your installed version, it doesn't replace it.

Cheers,

H

The Mac 164 beta includes an "Import PSD smart objects where possible" option in Preferences > General that must be enabled for this feature to work. I have done only very limited testing with a few PSD template files downloaded from the web (like with the second iPad Pro mockup item here), but it seems to work more or less OK -- smart objects are imported as embedded documents & can be edited in the usual way via the contextual menu "Edit Document" button.

“Edit document” button??? I can’t see this option on the iPad, other than importing smart objects, I can’t see anything that can be done with them that 1.7 can’t do???

I can’t see this option on the iPad

Hi @Dan freeman, this is the Affinity on Desktop forum and we're talking specifically about the current macOS beta of Affinity Photo. I don't know if it's been rolled out to the iPad version yet.

Cheers,

H

This option is available also in the newest PC beta 1.8.0..555

Where do you see it listed as supported? I can find no mention of "smart objects" in the list of fixes on the download page.
