Grok got a reaction from BubbleBla in Alignment Options greyed out in Affinity Designer 1.8.1
Of course, you're right about the number of clicks, for me it was annoying to visually watch something line up to the last selected "Align to" option instead of letting me set up the parameters first (like it was in earlier versions) and then press the Align method. If we're just counting clicks then that's fine and as BoFG has quoted above it seems to be the intended behavior now. Just a little jarring visually for me on bigger projects but if this the intention then this is the intention. Thanks for writing!

Hi I too have been having this issue across all Affinity applications on the Mac. Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher. It's starting to get really annoying on bigger projects. Please let us know where the dev team is on this issue. Thank you!

    Hi Subho,
    Welcome to the forums
If you select an alignment option from the icons shown, you'll be able to then choose the 'Align To' options from the dropdown box.
    I hope this helps!
EDIT - I've just checked and this behaviour has changed between 1.7 & 1.8 so I'm logging it as a bug with our developers - thanks for your report!

Grok got a reaction from RemN in [IDML Implemented] How can I open Indesign (indd and idml) Files in Publisher?
I, like many, can appreciate the amount of work that has already gone into creating Affinity Publisher Beta and I'm sure they will continue their work on the .indd import. In the meantime after running a few tests (both simple and complicated) I too have my workaround when need arises as @David Simpson has already stated in order to open an already finished InDesign document for further simple editing when necessary. Simply exporting the .indd into a PDF format imports quite surprisingly tidy into AP with editing possibilities that are fine for my needs.
As well, exporting from InDesign into an .eps file imports nicely although the text comes in as shapes so is not editable. Between both ways, this works for simple edits on an already finished .indd document. I wouldn't be switching to AP in the middle of a ID project anyways, so the finished .indd versions -> PDF is fine until AP gets the update for importing and hopefully exporting to .indd or at least .idml formats.
I understand a lot of the criticism at this point, yet still think Affinity deserves a good round of applause for taking on such a giant and I'm confident they will listen to their community (which personally I feel Adobe does not) and will produce their updates. I already like AP and am well excited to see where it goes.

I totally agree with this! It seems Affinity Publisher is building an app to be a great UI layout designer and brochure layout software. Nice and useful direction, but, print and digital publishers need more from a publishing app. Being able to control the number of pages in signature units goes a long way in the Print Book option. I think this is a basic request as well as eBook export. Those 2 basic features would position AP for a competitive option over other industry publishing apps.

    Hello,

I'm impressed with the development so far, but I have a request regarding the document bleed settings. I would really like to see a guideline pop up within the document showing where your bleeds are. It would definitely help me in planning my layouts.  and maybe an option to convert lines to guides for if I needed to set up a dieline on a shape that is not rectangular.

More print production tools in general would be nice - separation preview to determine percentages of ink coverage, and so on.

    Thanks

Have to agree with some of the above who would expect complete book publishing export--including eBook--from Publisher as you can find with publishing software like Vellum (which approaches both print and eBook production). After all, this software is called Affinity Publisher.
I find this software to be typical of Serif: well-designed, pretty, comprehensive...and intimidating to someone who can, but won't, take the time to learn the ropes,  let alone the fine threads, of this impressive software unless it has the payoff I require as a busy independent publisher with three books in the wings (one of them illustrated).  Serif missed the boat with previous publishing software, but hits the mark when it comes to titles like Drawplus and the Affinity group. If the only export were to .pdf files (with much higher resolution than the Aff. Pub. offers at present) and set up for Print and Ebook, I would put my money--and my time--on the table right now. But that also would have to include functional templates included for print and Ebook production--and not as an additional purchase.  Because this is early in the app history, let's hope this will be considered. Otherwise, I am not sure who the target consumer group is for this product. Mainstream or production teams? Depends upon how much money Serif wants to make and whether it will move the cross-hairs from elite in-crowd to ordinary folks.
That said, I tested the Beta software and found everything installed easily and ran smoothly. The sample brochure exported to .pdf quickly and completely. I didn't find that the table of contents were linked, however, surprisingly, to interior content. I opened the .pdf in Adobe Acrobat and enjoyed the full screen presentation. At full screen, the elegant type font was tiny. Increasing resolution will fuzz up the pictures because the .dpi settings in Aff. Pub. are too restrictive, the max being 400 dpi.  I did not print the results.
Hope my input helps. In summary:
the sample brochure converted nicely to .pdf but should have allowed for higher resolution so that pages can be magnified by the viewer. this Publisher program should publish more than fancy brochures and take on the print (fiction and textbooks) and eBook  pub market.  Aff Pub should decide who its market is and let us know, too.

I was also concerned about importing all of my old InDesign files - but found that importing a PDF exported from InDesign worked amazingly well with Affinity Publisher. I can start editing right away and make as many changes as I like, and save the file as an .afpub file.
Very impressive, and immediately useful to me.
