…and what is with the bleed-thing? Will it be fixed? Maybe in the next century?

Apparently you are not satisfied with the Affinity range but pretty happy with the features and performance of the Adobe Suite. That is totally fine. Nobody expects you to try out beta software. And nobody will force you to make a switch in the end. Adobe is not going to exit the market, so why don't you stick with their (quite capable) software. Or - if not pleased by them neither - look for something else? There is plenty of competition, e.g. Quark, CorelDraw, Corel PhotoPaint, Sribus etc...

  2. Hi there!

I've just tried to open a SVG file that was previously created by AD. Unfortunately it is displayed incorrectly: It appears that a clipping path is not honoured on import. As you can see from the attached screenshots the file is displayed correctly by Firefox (and IE, Edge, Opera and Chrome as well). Adobe Illustrator displays it correctley, too, but gives a hint on import what might have gone wrong when exported from AD: "Clipping will be lost on export to SVG tiny format" (whatever that means...).

I've discovered this first with the new beta .112, but a quick test shows that the retail version .104 is affected as well.

    Regards,
    Volker

  3. Hi MEB,

thanks for your quick response. However, it leaves me thinking whether it is the right approach or not. To consider the intended output (print, web, photo, device) as a preset does make sense to me. But why should the paper size work as a preset, too? Often it does not make sense at all: The intended output is set to "print" and the colour format to "CMYK, ISO coated v2", but any following change of the paper size resets the colour format to "RGB/8" while the intended output remains "print"... Since when do print shops use RGB? So, one has to correct the colour format and profile again to "CMYK, something...".

Maybe it is worth to discuss this matter internally.

    Best,
    Volker

  4. Hi there,

when setting up a new document changing the paper size always resets the colour format back to RGB/8. That is somehow counter-intuitive: Sometimes I forget to set the paper to the required size but select CMYK first. As a consequence I have to set the colour mode to CMYK again after having changed the paper size. A bug or an intended behaviour?

    Best,
    Volker

  5. I was confused by the transparency as well and had to look it up. But that you spotted the regression regarding the bitmaps - remarkable. I'll get it reported (credit goes to you).

By the way: The print shop folks have not been able to specify so far why they can't print the file... I guess, I need to find another print shop...

Again: Thanks for all your help!

    Best, Volker

  6. Hi Mike,

wow, you offer quite a service!

In the meantime I requested the print shop to specify in detail why they are having trouble to print the document. If you are interested: I've attached the original PDF that I sent to the print shop. Even my Acrobat shows clearly that there is a spot colour named "lack" in the document.

    Volker

  7. Hi MikeW,

thanks a ton for your effort and your explanation!

Yes, the coating is supposed to cover just the word "Frohe", nothing else.

The print shop asked me to create a spot colour named "lack" (just the German word for coating) and use this spot colour for anything that needs to be coated. As this is in fact a transparent colour that goes an top of the other colours I was asked to use this on an extra layer on top of all other layers. Then I was asked to "convert it to PDF/X3 (compatibility with 1.3 preferred)" - and then they complained about not being able to find a spot coloured named "lack" in the file... I guess I need to talk to them now knowing that the generated PDF was okay (apart from the fact, thatX3 doesn't support layers).

    Again, thanks a lot.

    Best, Volker

  8. Hi Lee,

yes, my initial tought was that I might have missed an option (and I probably have) but both options you mentioned were set: spot colour enabled (when creating the global colour) and "honour spot colours" (when expoting to PDF). So I a bit puzzled....

Perhaps the original file might give you a clou what went wrong?

  9. Hi there!

For a little greeting card I intended to use a transparent coating on some parts of the design. The print shop asked me to create an extra layer for this (at the very top of all other layers) and paint all areas in question with a new spot colour named "lack". So I created a new global spot colour, named it "lack", set the option "overprint" and painted the areas in that top layer with the new spot colour. As requested I exported the document as a PDF/X3 file.

Unfortunately the print shop is not able to print the design as the can't identify any colour named "lack". Additionally they say that there was no top layer. So I'm a bit confused... How can I fulfill the requirements of the print shop?

    Any hints are highly appreciated.

    Kind regard,
    Volker

Any news about this bug: https://youtu.be/nx-lMhZSD2E

If you hold Space and drag slowly everything if fine, but if you hold Space and drag fast you get unwanted clicks registered. This is so annoying, that it stops me from using Affinity for any work I do.

I've tried to reproduce this behaviour on my computer... with no results. Even if I try to click the mouse a short moment before pressing the space bar - everything works as expeted. Maybe a specific problem with your machine?

  11. Hi there!

AD is a fantastic app, no doubt. But two problems, that have been around for quite some time, drive me crazy: the broken guides (in combination with artboards) and the display issues with margins.

As mentioned by other members here before, it is still impossible to position guides precisely on artboards using the guides dialog box. Whatever number one types in, the guides get positioned randomly on the artboard. My impression is: It even gets worse with every new built...

Additionally page margins are not displayed at all in a document containing artboards. And if they are displayed in rare cases, they spread over two artboards: top, bottom and left margins on one artboard, top, bottom and right margins on the other artboard. At least with my version running on Windows.

    Please, do something about it!

    Thanks, Volker

  12. Hi,

I just wonder whether there is an easy way in Affinity Designer (1.5.2 on Windows) to turn the background of an imported GIF file transparent?

I've created a sketch comprising several elements spread all over the document. Now I want to import a greyscale GIF with a white background. My goal is to turn just the white background transparent without using masks or the selection brush. Is there a way to tell AD to remove the background of just the GIF with a few clicks?

    Thanks for your help!

  13. Hi there!

Maybe I miss something... but: I am in serious trouble exporting a set of drawings - and can't figure out what went wrong on my side.

Initially I created several artboards using CMYK/8 as colour space. Then I did all my layout work (business cards, all with a white (paper) background) and decided to export all of the artboards as PNG files using the export persona. But as I used CMYK the exported PNGs wouldn't show proper results. So I changed the colour space to RGB/8 by using "document setup". Then I switched back to the export persona and selected all artboards to be exported. And here is, where the trouble started: All exported PNG files did have a black background. Even with the background set to white as an export option, the backgrounds remained black.

To me a black blackground (zero colour) would make sense in a CMYK configuration. But with having set RBG as colour space? It would also make sense if the background of the files would have been transparent. But they are all white. The attached file might demonstrate the problem.

What am I doing wrong here? Any help appreciated!

    Best,

    Volker
