  1. Nevermind...stupid moment on my part! I was looking in the beta, not the released version.
  2. I keep reading that the insky brushes were supposed to be available in AFPhoto on the welcome screen. I don't see that. Is there another place I can get them?
  3. In the latest release, when creating a procedural, what you type in the equations field doesn't stay. For example: Open up an image Open up the procedural texture filter You should have no equation lines yet Click on the + to create a new equation line. It will just show a 0 in the field now. Change that 0 to x and hit enter or tab. Notice how the display goes back to 0 but the filter actually took effect? If you click back in the field it will show what the equation actually is (in this case just x). If you create another equation line by clicking the + button then the original line will now show the equation that was in there and the new line will show 0.
  4. That is what I was doing wrong! I must have had a pixel layer selected 'by mistake' when it worked. Thank you very much for clearing that up!
  5. Just a clarification for us PC users. Instead of hitting the delete key, hit the backspace key or you will delete the whole layer. That is what happens on my system anyway. They might want to fix this.
  6. I'd like to make some suggestions for making the creation and use of the procedural texture filter a lot easier. Allow the formula to be created in a text area, not just a single line. Making this area collapsible would be great so you could hide it if desired Instead of having to use the RGBA buttons to target a channel, just make those global variables. Then from any equation, if you set R = some value, it would affect the red channel. Documentation There really needs to be more documentation. Not just a list of functions but what those functions do and possibly an example of what they might be used for. Not teaching mathematics but at least giving the idea of what a function does. There is mention that you can't use a variable name that clashes with established function names but there isn't a list of all the function names. Yes, there are the functions like smoothstep, vec3, abs, etc. But it also says you can't use w but we aren't told clearly what w stands for. I know it is width but there is also h which is height and that isn't mentioned anywhere. And then there is rx and ry which are very important but never clearly defined. Having all these clearly defined with an explanation of how they are used is a must. And when would you use x and when would you use rx? I know some of these answers by trial and error but more straightforward documentation would be very helpful. Range inputs It would be really nice to have input ranges instead of just 0-1 and -1 to 1. Without this you have to put scaling variables in the equation which just makes things messy and difficult to read and control. Letting the user define they want the slider to be a real number slider between 1 and 100 (or whatever other range or number types) would be wonderful. Errors It would be really helpful for the system to highlight where the error is instead of just not applying the filter. This would make it easy to find an error quickly especially if it is just a simple error (missing a ; or putting in " instead of ', etc) That's it for now. It's really fun to play with the procedural texture feature but frustrating at the same time. Through trial and error I've been able to make some interesting things but it is very slow going partly because of the above issues and partly because my math education stopped in high school...
  7. Forgive me if this has already been answered. I looked but couldn't find the answer. Is it possible to do a tileable fill with Affinity Photo? I've seen references to doing it in designer but not photo. I did a bitmap fill using the gradient tool but it doesn't tile the bitmap, it just extends the edges which is not very useful (for me anyway). Thanks
  8. In the docs for the procedural texture filter there are lines like this: mapcui(T v, T edge0, T edge1) perlin(S x, I octaves, S persistence) What do the S and T and V's mean. I'm guessing V is for vector. What are the others?
  9. The procedural textures are a neat idea but they seem very unusable unless you have a math degree. The same was true with the equations filter. Perhaps making some sort of user friendly interface would increase their usage and make them more useful? Or at least substantial documentation with lots of examples.
  10. I second all of these suggestions. I was just trying to replicate my process for gathering up pictures for scapbooking and these deficiencies make the whole process take 10 times as long as it does in photoshop. It's simple things like this that make the program so much more useful. I realize I could come up with a different process that might fit AP better but these suggestions seem so 'simple' and logical. Another example: I convert all images to 320 dpi for printing (that is how the printer wants them). So when making a layout I create a 12x12 320 dpi image to create the scrapbook layout. Now I open each picture that will go on that layout. They open with 72 dpi so I have to convert them. In PS all I do is grab the crop tool, set it to 320 dpi (once per session) and then crop the image to whatever size I need. It automatically converts it to 320 dpi thus killing the proverbial two birds with one stone. In AP I have to create a new 12x12 document. Then open up the image. Go to resize document, click type in 320 dpi, uncheck resample image, then click ok. Then I have to grab the crop tool and crop. This obviously take much longer. There are MANY other example. Still love the program but it does take more work to do many things.
  11. Sorry, when I said beta I meant the pre-release version. This isn't like affinity where they have a beta version that is actually a later version being tested. This was the release BEFORE the final release was put out so it is actually older. If I didn't push the highlights all the way down then it wasn't quite so scary. They introduced a Raw Develop 'filter' in the release version that helps the highlight recovery a lot (among other things).

I pulled the highlights all the way back which I wouldn't do normally but I wanted to see what would happen. RawSamples.pdf

  15. In photoshop it is very convenient to be able to drag a layer from one image and plop it in another open image. I haven't found a way to do that in AP yet. I suppose one could select the right layer, copy, then go to the new document and paste but it is so much easier to see the layer you want in the layer list, grab it and drag to the new document having it create a copy of the layer there. I've tried various things and ended up with frustrating results (it not creating a new layer but 'pasting' the image into an existing layer for one). Perhaps I'm just going about it wrong. Is there a way to do this drag and drop layer procedure with AP?
  16. I have had really good experiences with Luminar 2018 so far (granted I have only been using it for a couple days). Every raw image I threw at was processed reasonably quickly on a mid range machine and the ease of getting a nice looking image is terrific. I can pull up a raw image (CR2) and spit out a nice looking final render in under a couple minutes. In DXO it would have taken me WAY longer to get a comparable image and many times I couldn't have done it solely in DXO. Granted, the noise reduction is better in DXO and it handles lens distortion better but when your end project is to get a nice picture to put in a scrapbook or on the wall, those high end features really don't come into play. DXO also always introduced artifacts into my images when I used some of those higher end features (chromatic aberration fixes and lens sharpness) so I don't miss them much. If I needed to process a high ISO image I can always pop into DXO and use the noise reduction there. There are some bugs to work out still but the same holds true for Affinity. I don't feel like the speed of the program is that slow. I can pull up a full quality raw image from my T3i, add several filters to it and even another layer or adjustments with a mask and still have it working pretty much real time (on a i5 8GB machine). In fact, I find it to be at or better than the performance of DXO. Compared to NIK, for simply processing a photo to get a nice picture, I can get a quality look quicker in Luminar. Obviously NIK has other features which aren't part of Luminar's scope so it doesn't do any good comparing those. I look forward to the additions that are promised. I always by software on what is currently available though, not what they promise will come later. There is always less disappointment that way. I haven't tried using it as a plug in in Affinity yet. If that works it would be icing on the cake.
  17. When I use a brush with the wet edges box checked that setting sticks and applies to every other brush I use. Steps to reproduce 1. Open a new session of AP 2. Create a new document 3. Select the brush tool and select one of the basic round brushes. The wet edges check box shouldn't be checked. 4. paint a little on the document 5. Change the brush to something that has wet edges checked. There are some in the DAUB Bristles or DAUB Gouache categories. You should see the wet edges checkbox become selected 6. Now go back and select the original brush used in step 3. You should see that the wet edges setting is still checked when it should be off according to the brush settings.
  18. Great, thanks. Love the program by the way. It takes a little while to learn the Affinity way of doing things (as opposed to PS) but the results are getting better and better.
  19. When trying to follow the macro tutorial video on vimeo (https : // vimeo.com / 192599545) I keep getting an error that doesn't happen on the video. It happens right away when I try and rename a layer. The attached error comes up. I hesitate to say this but I can't be doing anything wrong because at that point in the tutorial you just open an image, duplicate the layer, and rename it. Is there a version difference between windows and mac? I notice he is working on a mac. Thanks for any insight.
  20. Every year I do a door poster for each of my kids for their birthday. I usually put it together in photoshop but I thought I'd give it a try in AP this time. It is just a simple composite but it was fun to do. The horse is a Breyer model she took a picture of. I took her off a picture we had of her on her real horse. The ribbons are from a photo I took of her ribbons. The background is from the internet somewhere. I added the text and shadows on the ground as well.
  21. I was trying to make a macro of the tutorial on making a portrait look like it was shot in technicolor. When I tried I was told at almost every step of the way that the action I was performing couldn't be recorded by the macro. This included renaming layers, clearing channels in layers, even switching layers. Am I doing something wrong or are these really limitations of macro recording?
