If you´re using Photos.app to organize your photos they go into a package and held hostage in "Photos Library.photoslibrary" - you can examine its content via context-menu "Show content"->originals. If you want to edit a photo with APh, the normal way is to open it by double-clicking on it, then click on "Edit" and under Extensions: select "Edit In Affinity Photo", which will automatically start APh and load the image. These extensions can also be added later via "Manage" if they are listed in the macOS-Preferences in Extensions. They would then have to be activated/checked so that Photos.app knows about them.

In AD: Turn on Outline View 1. draw a line - duplicate - rotate 360/32° from the center - enter - power duplicate 14x for a full "circle" 2. Layer Geometry->Merge Curves - adjust Stroke width to 0,00001 - Layer->Expand Stroke 3. Draw your rectangle and put it underneath the "star" 4. Select both and go Path-Subtract 5. Select central nodes and delete File with history attached. OuterNodes.afdesign

That's most likely because the paths have the same direction - changing the fill rule is just a "cosmetic" repair. I'd "reverse" either the outer or inner Path to make it "robust".

Ok - ready for some bad and interesting news? I wrote to Joao Canziani because I wanted to know how the look was created on this photo: Although he is credited as the creator in the metadata, this shot is not his and he has never seen it before. Also there are different authors named for each of the uploaded images. Nonetheless: For the look he gave me the following recommendation which I quote here for you:
