  1. Just this evening I've made a test: My iMac 2008 has 6 GB RAM. AP settings -> 'Performance' -> 'RAM usage limit' had been set (automatically) to 6.144 GB. Now I've set the performance to 5.120 GB, and my huge files (130 MegaPixel, ~ 650 MB file size) load considerably faster than with the default settings. In addition, the 'kernel size' is reduced a lot (down to 1.3 GB) after closing the file. With the default setting it remained at almost 2 GB for a very long time. I even reduced the 'Undo Limit' to 250 (which is for my purposes more than sufficient) As strange as it is, I like it.
  2. Is there any chance that you assign another color to the grid? Purple would be great, because that's pretty unusual in natural colors.
  3. It was you who wanted to have a straighten tool, not me. I just mentioned that I never have any problems to get anything level if I use the appropriate camera. Tilt is a camera front or rear standard movement you can't reproduce or mimic with a software.
  4. A horizon is always level. Some people call it horizon, some call it straight level, some call it level. Maybe the AP team should use the name 'straight level horizon' or 'level straight horizon' or 'horizon level straight' or 'straight horizon level' or 'level horizon straight' or 'horizon straight level'? Uhhhh, what about some kinky acronyms? SLH, LSH, HLS, SHL, LHS, HSL? Oh no, the last one is already taken. I don't know. I just use a tripod and a head with two calibrated bubble levels and a large format camera with 6 calibrated bubble levels. Saves me a lot of time I would have to spend in front of my Mac. I know hundreds of people who wish they had your problems...
  5. Using the picker and clicking on a white (or brightest) pixel doesn't need a percentage, ° Kelvin or anything else. But it would help a lot if AP would feature an auto white balance, where the software selects the brightest pixel and adjusts the image accordingly for a perfect white balance. The picker is great if you want to modify the WB to emphasize a certain mood (if you know the color theory).
  6. If someone insists on specific short cuts, he/she should keep the software that offers these shortcuts. I am always open for new things, and I think it is just a matter of a few weeks to get accustomed to other key combinations.
  7. You can use Scribus, the open source page layout software. Though it requires a bit learning, it produces the best PDF/X-3 files you can get for offset or digital printing.
  8. One solution: Print the document -> Open PDF in Preview (bottom left -> PDF) and specify your page size there. It works like a charm. If needed, you can change the document size in AP and crop the image to the correct aspect ratio before you print. With this workflow I'm sending my images to my printer RIP which takes care of color and paper profiles, resolution, etc.
  9. Just click the check box below the lock in the layer panel, add a new layer, start painting or paste part of an image. Unlock the background layer, delete it. Use the export persona to save a selection as a *.png file or use export to save the image as a *.png file.
  10. Does the file you are working on have many layers and grouped layers? The slow screen refresh points into that direction and to the graphic card.
  11. This option is only available in Affinity Designer. Compared to the price tags other products carry, why don't you just purchase Affinity Designer?
  12. Update: I have to apologize - the rectangular marquee tool doesn't have a bug. Today I selected the option 'Antialias' and bingo - the edges are absolutely clean without any white pixel border. So many options, so little time remaining <sigh>
  13. Well, look into the dcraw files and enjoy to discover - you won't believe it - PhaseOne as well. It is already implemented in the standard code. All vendors just code some kinky stuff around dcraw, add GUIs and spice the core thingie up to add some features.
  14. http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/ Scroll down to -> Other Raw Photo Decoders Note that this page is several years old. If you are in doubt, ask your software vendor - you'll be surprised...
  15. Slow is relative. I'm on a late 2008 iMac Core Duo with 6 GB RAM and process scanned large format images with file sizes starting at ~ 650 MB (per file!). Loading the file takes around a minute after starting AP (from an external FW drive), but is around 25 seconds when loading the third file. Basic editing, retouching, applying filters, etc. is fast enough to not invest into a newer Mac. If you should happen to run ClamXAV (virus scan) and dropped an image folder into the Sentry, or dropped '/' into Sentry, it will force any Mac down to the knees. Maybe it is the same problem with other virus scanners? Just my 2 cents...
  16. Mike, did you try Hugin? It's open source and it is absolutely fantastic. Just make sure you select the options as in the screenshot. Photometric: > Low dynamic range, variable white balance < It works without any flaws, better than Autopano Giga, and it works with scanned images without Exif data. http://sourceforge.net/projects/hugin/files/hugin/hugin-2014.0/Hugin-2014.0.0.dmg/download
  17. When using the rectangular marquee tool to select i.e. a small part (85x85 pixels) of the current image (6024 x 4016 pixels), copy and paste it as a new document, there is a one or two pixel wide line around the new image. Nothing that will jeopardize my life, but ironing out this bug would be great ;)
  18. I second mredig - I have spent so much time to search a saved or exported file because I forgot to select the appropriate folder! At least it would help if the path or folder would be displayed in the top window bar. Currently I have to switch to XnView to check where the original is located... on an old Mac it is kind of frustrating.
  19. Though I don't process many files from a digital camera, this sounds very interesting to me.
  20. Another night to 'play' with AP. Downscaling a 130 MP TIFF from a film scan with the above settings is absolutely great. However, downscaling an image from a digital camera (24 PM) is not as effective in comparison to the film based image. But I encountered a strange behavior. After retouching around 200 dirt spots on the image (scan from a film), AP started to need a long time when I tried to open a menu on top. Then I just saved the image (TIFF), closed AP, restarted AP (to release and recover memory), and opened the image. It was pure black! Shock in the night... What is weird: I could see the image in XnView MP, open it with XnView MP and with PL. Saved the image again, closed PL and opened it in AP - everything was there. So it seems that AP made a mistake in saving the huge TIFF. I still had 2 GB RAM free, so I really don't know what happened.
  21. Are not all RAW converters and developers based on DCRaw? AFAIK even Nikons Capture NX 2.xx is based on DCRaw. BTW, if you should be interested you can use Rawtherapee - it is the only RAW converter which does not apply any algorithm if you don't want to. With a good camera for capture RT delivers stunning tonal ranges and natural colors (like negative film). The RT team even developed a feature to eliminate CA (chromatic aberration) without having to specify the lens. I've used DCRaw for almost a year with excellent results. The original is free and if you know how to use terminal, it is the fastest you can get. I am mentioning this because you can always limit or shrink the tonal range, but never extend it.
  22. Update. After playing a bit with AP last night, I discovered a nice workflow for my huge images: Load them, retouch and correct them if necessary, and then just export them with a specific size for web presentations, resample with Lanczos 3 non-separable, quality 95%. Result: awesome quality, no downscaling of the original, no extra sharpening. It's just a matter of thinking different ;)
  23. Don't get mad about this behavior. A few weeks ago I mentioned in a forum that there will be a new image editor named Affinity Photo, and the admins deleted my account. Why waste precious time in lousy forums anyway?
