One question... When you right click on an Affinity Photo file, *.afphoto,  and in the floating menu that appears, you click on "Open With", what does it show, then? A list in what appears all the v1 and v2 apps that you have purchased? Or only V1 ones ? In my case it lists all 6, v1 and v2 apps.

I can't test anything as I am in my Win 10 right now, and this one does not have the problem. I can think of 4 things to do (not to do all 4, but the first that works, you stop there, of course). But I'd try them in the listed order.

One idea that comes is to check in Windows Settings-> Apps -> Default apps -> Set defaults by app. And check if Affinity Photo v2 settings are correct. Or if the app is actually listed there (it should).

Other could be to fiddle in Windows folder settings in one particular folder. Set the view as 'details' or 'list' (to ensure it really takes it I do it setting "for all folders", clicking that button in folder options, but that would change settings for other folders, too),  restart Windows, set again that folder as full thumbnails, restart . Thumbnail problems have gone away for me sometimes doing that, with other applications/issues (I haven't got them yet with Affinity). If it is solved by this, then in folder options you can click the button "set all folders like this folder", but only if you know what you're doing, as maybe you prefer other folders to display as details, etc (anyway, you can later on manually displays those specific folders as list, etc). I use the button a lot, as mostly I want all my graphic folders to display thumbnails.

Other problems have gone (again, with other apps) by setting on Windows Settings-> About -> clicking on the "Advanced system settings" link at the very right of that screen -> then  you get a tiny window, and just in the 'Advanced' tab you appear on, on the "performance" area, click on the "Settings" button. -> You will be now in a new window, in "visual effects" tab. Now uncheck the box "Show thumbnails instead of icons". Restart Windows. No folder should show thumbnails now, all just bare icons. Go back to the setting I just explained, and set as checked "Show thumbnails instead of icons" back, as you want it on, this just helps to fix thumbnails issues in some cases. Restart Windows and see if it solves it.

Also , there was a way to "flush" the Windows thumbnails cache, but was complicated and I don't remember the procedure right now...

All the things above, I'd try before this. But if nothing above works (all are fast, slower to explain than to do), I'd try to fully uninstall all Affinity V2 apps, and install them again. As I say, as a last resource.

Everything in Windows explorer is set correctly, and displays all other preview compatible files just fine. The exception of course being Affinity files.

Flushing the thumbnail cache would only fix issues with the smaller thumbnails, and not the larger preview window. As that loads media on demand when it is selected.

This is a fresh installation of Windows, as well as a fresh installation of Affinity Designer 2. This issue was not present in V1, and only manifested itself after V2 was installed.

+1 I was also surprised by this quirk.

I did not expect Select Same to select invisible objects, and I also did not expect Select Same to select locked objects. Without some way or option to limit the scope to only visible/unlocked objects, this feature is really hamstrung for my uses.

When the Select Same feature selects locked objects, you can easily end up in a situation that feels like a bug: Given I have 10 green circles that are visible, and 5 other green circles that are invisible and locked. Goal, to move the 10 green circles to a different part of the canvas. When I click one green circle, and Select Same, the 10 visibles + 5 invisible and locked circles are selected. And when I try to move my selection to the different part of the canvas, by dragging with the mouse or arrow keys, I cannot move them, because the locked ones are locked. Personally I would have expected only the visible ones to be selected, and then I could have moved them where I wanted.

Honestly, I do think the whole 'lock' function needs to just be brought in line with most common art apps. That would help both in this case, and countless others.

Please bear with the developers. The feature just got released recently and I think it is fair to give them some time to see our feedback and come to conclusions on how to make this better. I sincerely hope they take note of the feedback 🙂

Oh of course! I mean no ill will towards them. Software development is no easy feat. But as its software I use daily to pay my bills, I feel its important to express my feelings on the matter.

The point I was attempting to make is that I am surprised that the lock function allows anything at all to happen to the locked objects/layers. It could just be my memory playing trick on me, but I am accustomed to the lock function in other programs (Illustrator, CorelDraw, Inkscape, etc.) excluding locked items from any action whatsoever. I'm hopeful that Affinity Draw will incorporate something like this in the future so that the newly implement (and much appreciated) Select All function can be used a little more conveniently and efficiently.

The lock function in AD is indeed odd when compared to other software. The way it works just doesn't feel as intuitive as it could be I feel. Other programs do indeed prevent ANY action on a locked layer.

I think to limit the scope to a layer is perhaps the wrong wording since 'layers' in AD are basically objects. I assume you are thinking of artboards or group layers?

The way AD handles its "layer" system makes it really hard to explain doesn't it? Especially when you flip flop between raster and vector apps in your workflow xD. I'm referring to group layers I suppose, not individual objects. The "Layer" that's created when you use the "new vector layer" button at the bottom of the layers palette.

AD already allows you to limit the scope of many tools interactions to group layers via the "Edit all layers" toggle in the layers palette. So I feel like that would be a natural thing to apply to the new select functions as well.

I do agree. The addition of it at all is ultimately a plus. Its just a little disappointing that, as it stands now, its usefulness is frustratingly just out of reach for me.

  5. The new 1.9 update added quite a few neat new features, however, I feel like this one could use a few more tweaks to make it even more handy.

It would be amazing if we could have a toggle to limit the scope of these selection functions. As right now they simply select EVERY matching object in your entire document. While this is useful in its own right, its a bit of a nuclear option. I feel like having a toggle to limit the scope of these to say, a layer, would make them amazing for a wider variety of applications.

  6. Hello!

It would be fantastic if we could separate color sliders into its own floating window/dock. This way, we could have access to both the color wheel AND color sliders. While I understand the logic of lumping them into the same panel, having to click a tiny little menu button, and then switch the panels setting is a bit annoying when you just want to slightly tweak a color. Having the ability to access both would just be so much more convenient for doing coloring work.

Programs such as Clip Studio Paint have this feature, and its a major boon. Attached is an example of what I'm asking for in case my wording is a little confusing.

I'd be more than happy if Affinity dealt with floating Windows exactly the same way that Photoshop does, I've had no cause for complaint with the sizing calculations (and compromises ) that Photoshop employs.  As it stands with Affinity Photo, every time I open a file it's a two step process - open file and resize display (I never work with tabbed images, only floating ones, and usually lots of 'em).

I would 100% be on-board with this. As is, using floating windows is just painful. Especially when you accidentally open a new file when your last focused window was a floating one.

Separate mode / floating windows performance is at the moment most unsatisfactory. Usually windows open too small, apparently following the size of smallest monitor in setup (when they should follow the active monitor size). Also, toolbars, toolbox and palettes tend to get lost and need reset in startup to get them back.

Well that would certainly explain why it opens as such a large window by default. My second monitor is 1920x1080 where my main monitor is 2560x1440.

  9. Hello!

Floating documents are a great feature in any creative app, they're great for references, seeing your document at a different size, etc.

However, the Affinity suite of apps do a very frustrating thing when a document is opened in a floating window. If you already have a floating window, and a new document opens in that floating window, it will MASSIVELY resize it. Sometimes becoming even larger than the monitor it is on. It would be amazing if the size of a floating window was locked, so that it does not automatically change when documents are opened within them. As it is right now, the feature is nice, but leaves me pulling my hair out in frustration as I constantly have to resize windows to make any use of it.

Example 1 shows how I might use a floating window. In this case to quickly preview an image at a smaller size.

Example 2 shows what happens if open a file within that floating window. Bloating to an enormous size, and needlessly going completely off the screen on the bottom and right.

  10. Thank goodness, I'm not crazy. I'm having the same issues.

In addition to this, its almost impossible to change a node type while drawing with the pen tool. For example, when you wish to follow up a curve with a straight line, you click on the node once to swap it to a point. This is currently not working. You also cannot double click to terminate your current curve, and start a new one. I am using a Wacom Cintiq 24QHD.

With how my workflow is, this bug is a pretty annoying one. I hope its something the team can resolve soon.
