Alfred Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Here’s a cat: Here’s an ellipse: Here’s what you see in the Layers Studio when you drag the cat layer on top of the ellipse layer, the horizontal blue line across the middle of the target layer indicating that you’ve reached the nesting position: And finally, here’s the result: Apologies for the error in my earlier post, where I wrote “masking” instead of “nesting”. (You can use masking/cropping instead, if you prefer, but nesting/clipping is more flexible if you want to use 3D effects.) Josie Posted July 23, 2019 Author Posted July 23, 2019 Still trying to figure out how to place a cat in the middle of a donut without it being cut off. Quote
Josie Posted July 23, 2019 Author Posted July 23, 2019 That’s not what I’m talking about, I’m talking about how to put a cat in a donut like each one of these pictures without it being to complicated. What are the steps from start to finish using my iPad with affinity designer? It takes me forever cause the iPad is a little different then a computer, so I need LOTS AND LOTS OF HELP to figure this out. thanks. Quote
Alfred Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 52 minutes ago, Josie said: That’s not what I’m talking about What’s not what you’re talking about, Josie? You asked about hiding half of the donut, so I tried to explain it to you, unfortunately using incorrect terminology in the process! As for the steps, I already listed them: 1. Place a donut on the page 2. Copy it to the clipboard 3. Position a cat on top of the donut 4. Paste a second donut on top of the cat 5. Create a shape matching the “front” half of the donut 6. Clip the second donut to that shape At step 6, the “rear” half of the second donut will disappear, revealing the part of the cat that it originally covered. So at that point you’ll have three layers: a whole donut on the bottom layer, a whole cat on the middle layer and a half donut on the top layer. Since the top layer is based on a copy of the bottom layer, it will join up seamlessly to make it look as though there’s a whole donut going all the way around the cats body. Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 When I did what you told me to do this is what I ended up with. Am I doing it right or what am I doing wrong? To make the cat fit in the middle of the hole perfectly. Thanks. Untitled.afdesign Quote
Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 How do I get the cat in the middle of the donut like this. ‘What are the steps and can you show me a video? Quote
Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 It’s frustrating that I cannot figure this out and I’ve tried every which way to do it but doesn’t turn out right. Quote

Untitled.afdesign Josie, go into pixel persona and on the mask layer paint with a black paint brush to reveal the bits of the cat you want (black reveals and white takes away on the mask): Quote
Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 Ok. Also how do I do a cat like this then ? Quote
Sara72 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 1 minute ago, Josie said: Ok. Also how do I do a cat like this then ? It would be exactly the same way Josie, you just need to rotate the doughnut on its side and then use a different picture of a cat walking. Quote
Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 How did you get the cat nice and closed in the donut like that? Quote
Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 May I message u directly with this design? Quote
Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 Also how do I get the donut nice and closed looking around the cat like that both sideways and upright? Quote
Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 Can you explain what you did step by step? Affinity designer and photo Quote
Sara72 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 This is your file Josie, i downloaded it onto my ipad and painted on the mask with black to reveal the parts of the cat. Im using designer too, you just need to switch to the pixel persona to use the paint brush to paint on the mask. Quote

Since it’s unfilled and has a magenta stroke whose width is zero points, it isn’t actually doing anything. Sara72 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Sorry, I’m probably confusing things, I’m doing it one way and Alfred another. That rectangle that has no fill, nested with the doughnut needs to cover the whole doughnut, not just half, then you can move the cat into place, popping out of it, you don’t need the mask if you doing it Alfreds way. Josie Posted July 24, 2019 Author Posted July 24, 2019 When do you use the rectangle and how do you use the rectangle to make the cat look closed in the donut? Quote

No, you weren’t confusing things, Sara. If anyone was sowing confusion, it was me! I wasn’t actually “doing” anything apart from posting a screenshot with that (tiny) rectangle selected. If you look closely, you’ll find it near one of the pink sprinkles on top of the doughnut. Sara’s screenshot shows the second copy of the donut clipped to the rectangle so that you can only see the bottom half of that donut. The two donut layers (the whole one at the bottom and the half one on top) combine to make it look as though the cat is completely enclosed by a single donut. Please try to show us which particular aspect of the process you’re finding difficult. As I’ve indicated previously, I think the best way to do that is to describe the steps you’re following until you get stuck, and then tell us (a) what you expected to happen at that point and (b) what actually happened.
