In Publisher, I double click on a table to edit it.

When I move the cursor to a column divider to adjust the column width, I get prompted to draw another table (see attachment).

Why?

You're in the Table Tool and when the cursor is no longer hovering over the table, its edit mode changes into the table-creation mode again. Makes sense to me as it 'thinks' that you're ready to create another table.

Thanks, although I disagree with your point.

Although new to Publisher, it seems that the only way to adjust row and column widths is by having the headers visible.

For me, it's an unnecessary distraction, especially as a Shear option has been added to the column divider.

It doesn't happen in PagePlus.

Even with the Table Tool selected I dont think the Table Tool should be visable when hovering over any part of a table, there appears to be a few "sweet spots" where this occurs.

In the image below I had to simulate the Table Tool as it did not show on a screenshot but the position shows where the tool appears when hovering over a table.
