Hello,   I watched the video about linked text frames and in it, the tutor showed how to place text by choosing a document file.

When I try to do this, and navigate on my hard drive for a document file, non are available. They are all grayed out.  I have the text frame selected and am doing everything I see being done in the video.

Can anyone suggest why this is happening?

What kind of document files are you trying to Place?

That happens if you try to place with the Place Image Tool.
If you use the command "File" > "Place..." then you will see less grayed out files and get access to .txt, .rtf, .docx for instance.

That's a pity. I assumed this because you said "all" are grayed out.
With File > Place... at least some text file formats should be not grayed.

Edit: fine, you have been faster.
