Replace symbol

I created a new symbol and used it in many places in a document. I later created an updated version of the same group of shapes, but made these updates in separate document. Unless I have overlooked something, it now seems I must create a new symbol based on the updated group, and then replace all uses of the old symbol one at a time.

A replace symbol feature would be very valuable. I realise that the implementation details could be complicated, but if anyone can figure it out, you guys can.

I don't have an iPad but I dare to ask something:

 - Have you tried copying the new version you made into the older Symbol, and delete what you didn't want anymore?
