Bees
I don’t know what I’ve done. I was trying to figure out how to resize my canvas without resizing the art. For example, if the image is 3 inches, and I change it to 5 inches, it just stretches and warps the existing art. So little miss dummy here clicked around on artboard to see what that does. I couldn’t figure out how to undo whatever it did. The gesture was unresponsive, so I closed it hoping some window was stuck open or something. Now any attempt to open the file crashes the app. My file is now 20,998x13,316 inches. It should also be at 300 dpi, if this is relevant information. I should also probably include that it was 1.5x2 inches. Please. Any help would be appreciated. I feel so amazingly defeated. I just spent the past 6 hours working on this file. Is there anything I can do? Trying to save the file also crashes the app. Edited April 26, 2019 by Bees
Dan C
Hi Bees, Welcome to the forums I'm very sorry to hear this, I've not heard of this happening before but I have a few suggestions: Could you please double check that the file hasn't been saved in your Files app at all? I understand it's crashing when you're trying to save the document but a copy of your document is the quickest and easiest way for us to try and recover your file. Please try the Duplicate command from the homescreen, the app should create a copy of your file and may hopefully open this, as it will technically have no history and therefore may take slightly less resources to open. You turn it off by tapping it. You can choose what you want to resize (doc, canvas, pixel) in the Context menu Resize dropdown menu. If you choose Document or want to change dpi or Units, remember to turn off Resample. 8A4219B2-13FF-41F2-A834-807C51FA50B7.MP4 Quote M1 IPad Air 10.9/256GB lpadOS 17.1.1 Apple Pencil (2nd gen). DM1
@Bees You might find it useful to browse the PDF Help file if you are new to Designer. I found it really helpful to look at while working in Designer. Also be sure to check out the Affinity teams video tutes. They are very good. Thanks! I super appreciate your input. Sadly, I’ve tried changing the save destination to both Device, and iCloud, but the file doesn’t appear in either locations after several save attempts. I have also attempted to duplicate the file, and even saving that one, but everything still crashes. 6 hours ago, DM1 said: Hi Bees, to resize canvas or artwork or change dpi without 'resampling' the image you need to make sure the blue ring around 'Resample' is Off. I can’t figure out how to quote you and exclude your video. So, oops. Maybe that’s where I was making my mistake. What is the difference between resizing the document, and resizing the canvas? To be honest, I didn’t even notice that drop down. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve overlooked similar options. I’m slowly getting the hang of it, though. Thing is, when resizing under the document setting, even if I unselcect to resample, I’m still having issues. So, I’ve got a 500 pixel, by 500 pixel file. I open resize. If the first thing I uncheck is resample, then change the size to 500x1000. If I hit apply, this warps the image. Turns out, if you change the size, this makes automatically turns on resample. So, reverse order. Change size, then turn off resample, then apply... only, nothing happens. Go back into resize, and the document is still 500x500. Am I missing something? Is the resample strictly related to changing the dpi? It seems to work fine if the only thing I’m changing is dpi. Using the feature under the canvas setting seems to work amazingly, and now I’m just sad I didn’t notice it sooner. Shoot. 6 hours ago, DM1 said: @Bees You might find it useful to browse the PDF Help file if you are new to Designer. I found it really helpful to look at while working in Designer. I have used some of their tutorials any time I’ve hit bumps, but frankly, I just got lazy on this one. I googled a random tutorial, and when it didn’t resize the way I wanted it to, I looked elsewhere. Problem was, it was late, I was so close to finish, and I got impatient. I saw one mention of the art board, and figured there wasn’t any harm in seeing what the feature does since it could easily be undone, right? Ahahahaaa. Oh no. Bees
So.. could someone explain to me what an artboard is? I mean, I sorta get it when I’m not being a massive dummy. Let’s take a walk with a dummy. I open the feature. Oh, what’s this? Sure, let’s do document. Apply. Oh. The space turned gray. What’s that? I pinch inward to zoom out. The picture gets smaller and smaller until, it’s disappeard. Oh no. Attempting to zoom in does nothing. Keep zooming out in panic. The image is lost in the gray void. Let’s back out of the file, and back to the menu. Edited April 26, 2019 by Bees

DM1
9 hours ago, Bees said: So.. could someone explain to me what an artboard is? Artboards are like individual 'pages' on a design board. Within a single Designer document you can have multiple pages of different sizes. A bit like having multiple documents open. You can also place objects outside the artboards to store until you want or need to use them. Artboards can be added or deleted at any time. Any objects placed on a 'deleted' artboard will also be deleted. Quote M1 IPad Air 10.9/256GB lpadOS 17.1.1 Apple Pencil (2nd gen). Changing the document size changes the object sizes on the page in proportion to the new document width and/or height. There is a choice of resampling methods for raster (pixel) objects. This will always invoke 'Resampling' on pixel objects. Vector objects do not need to be resampled when resizing. When you resize the canvas the objects on the canvas do not scale, so they do not need to be resampled. This option allows you to crop the document or add more canvas around the edges to extend your working space. If you change your canvas from 500 x 500 to 500 x 1000 it will change shape from a square to a rectangle (stretch). The objects on the canvas.will not change. If you change your document from 500 x 500 to 500 x 1000 it will change the canvas shape from a square to a rectangle (stretch). The objects on the canvas stretch as well. If the objects are pixel based the document will be resampled to create the new 'stretched' shape. Quote M1 IPad Air 10.9/256GB lpadOS 17.1.1 Apple Pencil (2nd gen).
