ramsey sparrow Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 A new user here, trying to make sense of some of Affinity's idiosyncrasies after attempting to move from photoshop. I'm getting seriously frustrated trying to crop to a specific, basic aspect ratio (16:9) and finding a way to resize that aspect ratio crop to the image size, without loosing the proportions during resizing. No key shortcut, no box to tick, no menu. Such an elementary thing It makes me want to cry out in anger at wasting so much time on it. Looked on the net and the only thing I found is a forum thread from 3 years ago suggesting that... it can't be done? Can someone here please confirm this as I simply refuse to believe an apparently professional photo software could have ever been released without ability to lock the aspect ratio when resizing? I know it's not photoshop and things are different but it makes zero difference. We're talking absolute basics here. Thanks Quote
Old Bruce Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Choose the crop tool. on the context toolbar (View > Show Context Toolbar if it is not showing) you can see the word Mode: and a drop down menu, choose Custom Ratio and type in 16 and 9 or whatever you want. You can save it too. Quote Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 | Beta versions as they appear. I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

If what you're saying is true, then it confirms what I'm asking cannot be done: I have to guesstimate the aspect ratio of the image I'm working with by trial and error down to some ridiculous amounts. I'm speechless in disbelief Sarif, how did you ever release 'professional' software without ability to lock the bloody aspect ratio of an image I'm working on when resizing? FACEPALM Quote
A_B_C Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 Seems I don’t understand what you would like to do: but did you take a look at the different options of the Crop Tool, as was suggested? Crop.mov Quote

You said you wanted a 16:9 aspect ratio. If you choose Custom Ratio, and then 16:9 using the cog icon, your crop will be 16:9. Just drag a corner or edge to resize the crop box, and it will maintain that ratio. Drag the entire box to compose the image. A_B_C Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 Your explanation and a video should be enough to show that the voiced criticism is entirely unwarranted, isn’t it? Quote
ramsey sparrow Posted November 7, 2019 Author Posted November 7, 2019 (edited) Hi, thanks for all the replies. I have to be honest: it's been a longer while now and I can't quite remember specifically what it was that I wanted done back then. I think I do, but can't confirm it. What I know is that I have used all the tools and variables of the cropping tool mentioned here (I come from years of photoshop so those things aren't new to me) and could not achieve what I needed to do. As I mentioned I, after some digging I did find information on this or other blog that what I was trying to do was in fact unachievable in Affinity Photo, which surprised and angered me greatly at the time, as I just couldn't believe this can be the case. Since then, there was an update or two, so it's not impossible that whatever was missing was either a now-patched bug or simply fixed since. Looking at your video @A_B_C, it seems that all is fine now, but then again - it's been a while and I can't be certain of what it was I was dealing with. From my own initial description it seems like it was an absolute fundamental and basic thing, which is why I was so pissed. Thanks all Edited November 7, 2019 by ramsey sparrow affinity 'pro' instead of 'photo' typo. A_B_C 1 Quote
