danivar2000 Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 Hello everyone, I'm thinking about purchasing the app for my iPad, but I have a couple of doubts. At the beggining I thought the best idea was to transfer the RAW's files from the sd card to the macbook, and then copy the file into a icloud drive folder. Then, I guess I can open the raw with Affinity on the iPad, edit the photo and export a JPEG to de camera roll. I guess this is a factible workflow, isn´it? But I would like to have an option where the laptop is out of the workflow. Is it possible to connect the sd card via lightning adapter to the iPad and import raws directly to the Affinity app without importing previously into the Photo iOS app? As I understood, the Photos app opens up and import pics automatically when connecting the lightning adapter, and it's a problem for me. Thank you all. Quote
Staff stokerg Posted March 21, 2019 Staff Posted March 21, 2019 Hi danivar2000 and Welcome to the Forums, You would need an SD Card Adaptor for this BUT as you've already read, the Photos app opens up and imports the images into Photos. I'm not aware of a way to disable this and i don't think the SD card lightning adaptor would show in the Files app to allow you to open images directly from the SD card in Affinity. Quote
danivar2000 Posted March 21, 2019 Author Posted March 21, 2019 Thank you stokerg, the thing is...does the Photos app begin importing photos immediately without confirmation by the user? If don´t it would be easy, I cancel the import and keep using the Afifinity app, but I think it's not working like that....:( Quote
Staff stokerg Posted March 21, 2019 Staff Posted March 21, 2019 It's doesn't start the import right away, it shows you the images on the SD card and allows you to select which ones to import to Apple Photos. So you can skip that step HOWEVER, we have no way to directly access the SD Card in Affinity Photo, so the Apple Photos step is required. Even the Files app doesn't show the SD Card Quote
danivar2000 Posted March 21, 2019 Author Posted March 21, 2019 Well...so in this case I'm afraid I can't remove the laptop from the workflow I guess the best way to do it will be copying the raws to icloud drive from the computer, and then open these raws from Affinity Photo in the iPad, and once the raws are edit, export the JPEG to de camera roll. Maybe with iOS 13 we will be able to access the SD Card in Affinity directly, I wish! stokerg 1 Quote

That would be the best method, until Apple allow access to the SD Card in Files, there isn't a great deal we can do. The iPad operating system is heavily sandboxed and restricted, so it's not as easy as accessing an SD Card on say Windows or even a Mac. Quote
DM1 Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 I believe the cheap Chinese card readers allow files to be accessed by their 'reader' app and then shared with apps like Affinity (unlike the Apple card reader). Unfortunately, this doesnt work for me. I have the following RAVPower device: https://www.amazon.de/RAVPower-kabelloser-Kartenleser-Zusatzakku-Festplatten/dp/B00VUGUPH6/ And I did not find an easy way to import my Olympus RAW (*.ORF) files from either an inserted SD card or a connected USB harddrive. Although there is the option to open an ORF file via the provided RAVPower "FileHUB" app with affinity, affinity crashes without an error message (it simply closes). Urgently waiting for a solution. iCloud is not an option since I am often on travel where I dont have an internet connection. Any ideas? Jens Quote

The workflow apparently works if you can share with affinity. Tschens Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 Good point, thanks for that. I tried it with an ORF file from the brand new Olympus OMD E-M1X, which is not supported yet. Maybe that's the problem. I will try with another ORF file in the evening and let you know. Quote
DM1 Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 Your camera model is not listed as supported by Apple’s raw decoder. Apple do update frequently so keep checking. You made my day, DM1 from Down Under :-). It works perfectly with files from the OMD E-M1. The files from OMD E-M1X cannot be imported, even not with the very recent iOS update 12.2. I hope there will be a minor update soon which solves this issue. Cheers, Jens DM1 1 Quote
