ves2 Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Publisher has problems using the integrated kerning pairs of Postscript Type1 fonts. It ignores them! I noticed this with extreme pairs like LT. In new OpenType fonts this works correctly. Not so with Postscript Type1 – no matter if the AFM files or only the font suitcases are included.
Staff Sean P Posted February 26, 2019 Staff Posted February 26, 2019 Hi ves2, Would it be possible for you to attach a Type 1 font that contains some kerning pairs, and also what pairs do not work? Thanks!
ves2 Posted February 26, 2019 Author Posted February 26, 2019 Hi Sean, try the glyph pairs "LT" of the UniversBQ Mac PostScript (Type1) font. As an example for the correct metric kerning, I made a screenshot of FontExplorer X Pro and have attached it too. best explore! Jens UniversBQ.zip
Staff Sean P Posted February 26, 2019 Staff Posted February 26, 2019 Thanks for the file - unfortunately they don't to be working when I unzip them. In fact they both show as Zero byte 'Unix executables' according to Get Info on macOS.
ves2 Posted February 26, 2019 Author Posted February 26, 2019 one more attempt with and without file extensions. Good luck UniversBQ.zip
ves2 Posted February 27, 2021 Author Posted February 27, 2021 Hello Sean, Oh yes, the font has been damaged in the ZIP archive. Probably because old Mac Type1 fonts usually don't have a suffix but a resource and data fork. I have therefore packed the FontSuitcase type FFIL and the associated outline printer fonts type LWFN into a DMG image. Good luck with testing. UniversBQ.dmg

I'm sure you are aware that Font Type 1 is going away and Adobe advises people to start switching to Open Type format. Adobe will end Font 1 support in January 2023. ves2 Posted February 27, 2021 Author Posted February 27, 2021 Yes, thank you for pointing that out. I am aware of this. If a Type1 font is displayed and usable by Affinity, I expect full support, not half support (see kerning).
