Is there a way to remove the unused text styles from the window? I have created some basic variations, however, I would only like to see the ones that I am currently using in the document.

Sadly no. You can remove all at once, or just one at a time. You may also remove all 'based on' styles if you select a style and choose that option.

I clear all styles as soon as I make a new document and roll my own starting with a group called 'Base'. I had some troubles applying Character Styles to be Initial Words and Drop Caps in Paragraph Styles and it was due to the lack of a Base Group Style.

In lieu of "Delete all unused Styles" I would settle for a warning along the lines of "This Style is applied in the document. Do you want to delete it?"
