rgajdos Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Hi, I have opened a idml document and can not make the hyphenation work. Have downloaded the correct dictionary. Dalajlamova kocka 2025.afpub Quote
MikeTO Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Hi @rgajdos and welcome to the forums. This is a known issue. You have set Paragraph > Justification > Desired and Maximum Letter Spacing to greater than 0 which won't work with hyphenation. I included a tip for this in my Publisher manual: Tip: Due to a bug with hyphenating justified text, you must set Minimum, Desired, and Maximum letter spacing to 0 for hyphenation to work properly. If you set these values for justified text with Auto Hyphenation enabled or with words that include soft hyphens, Publisher may not break words at the optimal positions leading to undesirable white space between words. You'll have to set these values to 0 for hyphenation to work. You can find other posts related to this issue here: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/search/&tags=AF-5227 Also, the Hyphenation Zone setting is too high. I recommend using 0 (which will have lots of hyphens) or values up to 8 or 12 mm for fewer hyphens. rgajdos Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 Thanks for such a quick reply. Tried to change the settings as advised, but still no success...? Dalajlamova kocka 2025-test2.afpub Quote
rgajdos Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 So, it works when I switch to another language, but not with Czech hyph_cs_CZ.dic Quote
Hangman Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Hi @rgajdos, Just checking the obvious... Do you have the hyph_cs_CZ.dic file located inside a folder called cs_CZ inside the Spelling folder? /Users/username/Library/Spelling/cs_CZ/hyph_cs_CZ.dic This is what I see when opening your file... walt.farrell Posted March 9 Posted March 9 12 hours ago, rgajdos said: Have downloaded the correct dictionary. As @Hangman has hinted, you would need to download multiple files. Did you download all (3?) of them and install them in the correct location? Additionally, depending on where you downloaded them from, it is possible to get them downloaded in the incorrect format. So it would be useful to open each of them in a text editor and verify from the first few lines that each is a plain text file, and not an HTML document. rgajdos Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 (edited) Thanks so much everyone. I followed the procedure on page 373 of the manual and now have all 3 files where they should be, still no luck. Edited March 9 by rgajdos Quote
MikeTO Posted March 9 Posted March 9 The good news is your document is now hyphenating so now you just need to get the hyphenation dictionary figured out. Could you share a screenshot of the Spelling folder, with the cs_CZ subfolder expanded to show its contents? Or if you like, compress (zip) the Spelling folder and upload it here so we can check it. MikeTO Posted March 9 Posted March 9 You need to download all three dictionary files again because these your files are HTML and not plain text so the macOS spelling and hyphenation system is ignoring them. This time, right-click them and choose "Download Linked File As". If you just choose "Download Linked File" like you did previously, you will save it in HTML rather than as plain text. rgajdos 1 Quote Download a free PDF manual for Affinity Publisher 2.6 Download a quick reference chart for Affinity's Special Characters Affinity 2.6 for macOS Sequoia 15.5, MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) and iPad Air (M2)
