Most RAW files have a jpg embedded so they can be displayed on cameras and software as  thumbnail. Most show up as raw+jpg in lists. Is it possible to extract that jpg file?

Different raw formats have various types & nos of embedded thumbnails, this command will extract them all
exiftool -a -b -W %d%f_%t%-c.%s -preview:all filename.ext

eg NEFs hold ThumbnailTIFF, JpgFromRaw and PreviewImage. Once you know what you need you can change the command to say
exiftool -a -b -W %d%f_%t%-c.%s -preview:JpgFromRaw filename.ext

That’s brilliant. Thanks.

The other problem I have is splitting a raw+jpg file that’s stored in the camera and iPhone as a raw+jpg, but when you save it or export it etc it only gives you the jpg.

I’ve no idea where the raw file goes. Or perhaps I’m misunderstanding these save settings entirely. However… Lightroom (hush my mouth!) can save both the raw and the jpg. It seems to know how to split them.

What are you using to open those files? Is it the Apple Photos app or something else?

In Apple Photos there should be an option to export the unmodified original. Does that export only a JPG?

Amazing. I never knew that. After all this time.

It exports the raw as a dng, with todays date on it, and the jpg with the date the photo was taken.

Thank you for pointing that out. That’s a lifesaver. A real eye opener.

thanks

Robert
