Hello! :)

Maybe this is not a bug?

After I create a new symbol and rename it, in the Symbol Panel, the name does not update in the Layer Panel.

This causes a lot of confusion because all of the different symbols, in the Layer Panel, all have the same name 'Symbol'.

How do I update the Layer Panel name to match the Symbol Panel name?

Thanks for your help!

Hi @Fun Art Sam,

You should ideally name the Layer before adding it as a Symbol to the Symbols panel though having said that it still means all instances of your Symbol will have the same name, i.e., the name you gave it in the Layers panel before adding it to the Symbols panel so I'm unsure if that makes much difference...

I ran into this one the other day myself.

I had created a nice group of things, named it something informative, and created a symbol. Later, I made a second symbol and decided on a better, more informative name for the first symbol. Changing the name in the Symbol Panel did not update the names of the symbol instances in the layers panel. Had to update each by hand.

Perhaps not a bug, but would make a nice feature update.

@prophet That sounds so annoying! I guess we need to seriously preplan naming symbols in complicated projects.

I also noticed that longer names don't appear in the Symbol Panel, so shorter names are important. A list view feature would be helpful too!

Yes, I agree that a 'symbol layer name update' would make a great feature update! Make our lives a lot easier. :5_smiley:

@Fun Art Sam, they won't update in the Layers panel if they already exist on the canvas before you rename the symbol, that could be for good reason as I can see instances where you equally wouldn't want that to happen...

Perhaps the name remained synced in the Layers panel (like everything else in a symbol) until the user detaches the symbol. The name could then auto update to indicate the detachment (add a * or something). That would be a nice UI clue of the symbol's origin and the fact that it was detached. The user could then rename that instance if desired.
