When a Link's 'Include File on Export' option is not ticked the Absolute Link to an External PDF File Isn't Honoured

Recommended Posts

When a link's Include File on Export option is not ticked the absolute link to external PDF files File isn't honoured regardless of whether the external PDF has a space in its filename...

This impacts direct and data-merged external PDF file hyperlinks...

Note: Please see this thread discussing the issue when linking to external PDF files that include a space in their filename fails...

This doesn't affect non-pdf files where the absolute file path is honoured and clicking the link in the exported PDF file successfully opens the externally linked files...

@Hangman In Publisher, If I setup a hyperlink to a PDF on my desktop and leave Include File on Export unchecked. Then export to PDF and open in Acrobat the hyperlink works and opens the PDF file. Apple Preview doesn't open the linked PDF when the hyperlink is used.

So I'd like to confirm the workflow, location of the linked PDF and PDF viewer you're using, just in case.

Hi @Lee D,

My understanding of leaving Include on Export unchecked is based on the Help file which says:

"When a link's Include File on Export option is ticked and you export to PDF, Publisher makes a copy of the relevant file alongside the PDF. The link is amended to be relative, so moving the PDF and the external file together to a new location maintains the link between them. If the aforementioned option is not ticked, the file's full original location is hardcoded into the PDF and expected to exist on the reader's device."

So logically I assume this means that even if the external PDF file is moved to a new location the link should remain active but regardless of the Linked PDF's location when Include on Export is unchecked the Link isn't working (for me at least)...

I'm testing with Acrobat Reader and have tried with the Linked file located in a folder on my HD as well as my Desktop...
