There are a couple of issues when hyperlinking to external files...

  • When creating a hyperlink in Publisher to an external PDF file if the external PDF file includes a space in its filename, clicking the hyperlink in the source PDF file fails to open the external PDF file... e.g., Hello World.pdf fails, Hello_World.pdf works... This impacts Mac and Windows...

  • This is not the case for non-pdf files, e.g., Hello World.docx or Hello World.pages where the space in the filename is honoured and the file opened...

  • Creating an identical document in Word (Windows) or Pages (Mac) correctly honours the space in the external PDF filename so Hello World.pdf is successfully opened...

On Mac when linking to an external non-pdf file via Acrobat Reader, the link initially launches the default browser before opening the external application which doesn't happen on Windows... I think this is a Mac-specific setting though I'm still trying to figure out which setting to see if it can be disabled...
