Hi,

On Mac Monterey, Designer and Photo 2.4.1 don't show newly opened or created documents, after you have closed the background window.

1. Close all the document windows.

2. Close the blank, background window, to avoid it to block seeing everything that is on the back in the other apps.

3. Crete or open a new document.

No window can be seen in Photo or Designer. The documents are there, since when closing the app you are asked if you want to save them, but you can't see them.

To start seeing documents again, you have to relaunch the app.

Hi PaoloT,

This seems to be working fine here for me although I don't have access to a Mac with Monterey at the moment please could you provide a screen recording demonstrating the problem?

Thanks

Hi @PaoloT,

This is working for me on Monterey in both 2.4.1 and 2.4.2...

@Callum, I've in the meantime upgraded to v2.4.2, and the issue I described is no longer happening. I've tried it in several ways, but it no longer happened.

I don't know how, but it looks solved.

Unfortunately, this is still happening frequently (at least in Photo). I suspect it happens when some time is elapsed from closing the background window and opening a new document.

EDIT: No, it now happened after a couple minutes.

I don't know how to deliberately trigger this issue.

Hi @PaoloT,

Are you using Multiple Desktops on your Mac with a different app opened in each?

Affinity Designer 2.6.3 | Affinity Photo 2.6.3 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.3

No, it's just a single desktop.

Thanks for confirming...

I believe there is a reported issue where the instance you're describing can happen when using multiple desktops so I thought I'd check...

I'm nearing completion of a work where I had to edit some 500 images with Photo. Working with several open apps, and having to grab screenshots, I can't adapt to the odd Affinity philosophy, and I have to close the background frame. Most of the times, double-clicking .tiff files from the Finder switches to Photo, but with no open window.

I admit that this is really stressful. I hope this bug is soon catched and destroyed. Better yet, I hope the Affinity apps will be a bit kinder with us Macoids.

Hi @PaoloT,

It would be helpful if you could upload a screen recording showing the issue you're experiencing as it may help determine what is happening...

Sure. In this video you can see how I have Photo (v2.5.3) open, with the background frame closed and not shown.

I'm trying to open a couple TIFF documents from the Finder (Monterey). The Finder gives a visual feedback of the files being opened. But nothing appears in Photo.

In this image you can see that Photo indeed opened the two files, but there is no way to make the corresponding windows appear. I can select the shown items, but nothing happens.

This is absolutely reproducible – to be true, it is happening nearly always.

Hi @PaoloT,

Possibly a silly question but is Affinity Photo set as the default app for opening Tiff files, i.e. if you select a Tiff then use Cmd I or File > Get Info in Finder, is Affinity Photo shown under Open with as the default app? Your screen grab suggests the answer is 'Yes', but I just wanted to check...

If so, when you select one of the Tiff files in the Finder Window and then use Cmd O or Cmd Down Arrow does the file open in Affinity Photo?

Yes. As you can see in the video, double-clicking a .tiff file in the Finder makes Photo come in the foreground. Here it is:

How about the keyboard shortcut options?

I'm sorry for leaving them out, but I was considering them redundant…

Either Cmd-O or Cmd-Down Arrow produces the same result: documents shown in the View menu, but impossible to open as a window in Photo.

Again, thanks for confirming...

I'm assuming double-clicking on any other format file opens the respective file in the assigned app, e.g., double-clicking a PDF opens the PDF in your nominated PDF Reader or double-clicking an Apple Pages document opens it in Apple Pages?

I confirm. I'm not noticing any issue with wrong or unwanted association between file types and the corresponding app.

All very odd in that case... I wracking my brain trying to think of possible causes for what you're seeing with the Affinity Apps...
