Recolour EPS and SVG files in Designer 2

Recommended Posts

Hello all, newbie here using Designer 2. I have previously been using Adobe Creative Suite and want to use Affinity alongside this. How do I recolour and EPS or SVG in Designer 2? I am unable to find anything on the web or YouTube that can help me. I have tried opening the file, placing the file file, but same deal deal. I am unable to do any colouring of the artwork. SVG only show the outline of the artwork. If the EPS file is coloured, it cannot be changed. It would seem such a simple task, but I am lost. Thank you for your help.

Hi @Darren B and welcome to the forums,

Could you upload the SVG and EPS files so we can take a look…

Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5
MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse
HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse

I used File > Open. For the SVG you could try using the Layer > Geometry > Separate Curves command and that will give you several smaller curves which you can select and recolour using the Colour panel. The EPS opens fine here and I could select the various letters with the move tool and, again using the colour panel, change them from Black to whatever colour I wanted.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Hi Old Bruce, the Separate Curves option is greyed out with me unable to select it. That EPS files is a mystery because I created that in Illustrator myself, but I am unable to edit it. Some files come is as Linked, some Embedded. Some other EPS files I have purchased are fine, some aren't.

Hi Old Bruce, not sure what is going on here. It seems to work with most files now. If I create a new document and then check the document settings and selected prefer embed images I seem to have more success.
Thanks for your help.

Where are the problems supposed to be?

Hi Westerwalder, I think we have the problem sorted. It seems to be the option of Linking or Embedding artwork into the document.

Thanks everyone for reaching out and assisting me with this issue. I think we have it sorted now. I knew there would be a way to do it, but I just couldn't find it. I've only been using Affinity products for 1 day. I am a long term Adobe Creative Suite user so I am familiar with this type of software. I am looking forward to learning and creating more with this new (to me) software.
Kind regards Darren

As @Old Bruce mentioned above, you want to use File > Open rather than adding the files to an existing open document. That way you will see multiple layers in the layers panel when opening the EPS file which you can select and colour as required.

With the SVG file, as mentioned above, using File > Open followed by Layer > Geometry > Separate Curves will again give you editable layers in the Layers panel.

When you drag either file onto an existing document it will appear either as Linked or Embedded depending on the Image Placement Policy set for your document and you will see a single Layer in the Layers Panel prefixed with the </> icon.

If your Image Placement policy for the document is set to Embedded when dragging either graphic onto an already existing document, selecting the layer prefixed with </> in the Layers panel allows you to select Edit Document in the Context toolbar running across the top of the canvas.

Selecting Edit Document will then open the file in a second tab where the EPS file will display editable layers and with the SVG you will need to use Layer > Geometry > Separate Curves to edit individual layers and then close the second tab to see the changes reflected in the first tab.

If the Image Placement policy is set to Linked and you drag the graphics onto an already open canvas you won't be able to edit the files in the way you want.

If you are adding either graphic into existing artwork then if you wish to edit them, either set your Image Placement policy for the document to Embedded so you can edit them in a second tab or use File > Open to open them in a new document, edit them then copy and paste into your existing document.

Hi Hangman,
thank you very much for your detailed response. It took me a while to figure out the Embedded v Linked placement option to enable me to edit the EPS/SVG files. It is so simple now. The fun part now will be leaning the new names in Designer v Illustrator for all the different options.
Kind regards
Darren
