Affinity poor window management

Recommended Posts

Affinity applications have had issues with windows management from the start, its been years and I don't see any improvement.

1. If you quit the application while working in fullscreen mode, opening the application will result in a maxed out window that even go under the menu bar.

The dimensions of the window when not in fullscreen should be stored and used instead.

2. Linked to this widow size problem, the screen might not be the same as last time the application was opened so the window should never exceed the screen size minus the dock (if it is not hidden) and the menu bar.

I think Apple design guidelines do define all of this.

3. When opening the application, the personas button are sometimes in the same place as the windows buttons. As if the fullscreen mode was never exited.

4. Opening a file in an application should always put the focus on the application AND show the space where the application is active.

Currently if you open a file by dragging it on the application icon (which is a very common practice for long time macOS users) the application will only gain focus. You have to change between your spaces to see that the file was correctly opened.

This drives me nuts as I always wait for the application to load the file and then appear like all the other applications do, then after a while I remember that I have to switch to the application's space.

Can't confirm, using v2.3.0 on Ventura, MacBook Air 15". Relaunching or reopening a document goes directly back to the full screen mode.

However, v2.3.1.2217 beta behaves differently, and upon relaunching/reopening, the window just fills the screen in the regular mode ignoring my left-hand pinned dock. That could be a still unresolved symptom of this bug: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/search/&tags=AF-1679

The fix is easy though:
Window menu → Zoom

Never seen this before. You should provide more technical details about your hardware and OS.

100% agreed!

We are aware of this and already have this logged with the Developers.

Not something I've been able to replicate here.  Which version of MacOS are you running?

I'll make sure this gets logged as an improvement :)

Hi @stokerg,

1. Nice !

3. I am running the latest macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 (23C71) on an Apple M1 Pro.
This is not constant, and right now I’m unable to reproduce so this might be a non issue.

4. This is something that drives me crazy, so while not a priority compared to actual bugs this would improve my daily experience greatly 😊

Neither am I.

Ah, the old trope of "works fine for me". The subtext of which, whether intended or not, is that the problem is somehow the reporter's fault.

I have recently experienced the first three of the above strange behaviours. Seeing the window under the OS menu bar occurred the other day and was definitely a "what the heck?!" moment – it is just as well that the draggable area is large enough to remain visible. The second oddity sometimes happens to me at random; today, it occurred after installing the 2.3.1 update. The third oddity I have not actually seen for some while; it has probably happened only once or twice in several years so I assumed that it had long since been addressed.

Incidentally, the traffic lights still refuse to show their icons when hovered.

This also occurs if you have Publisher open on a second screen and quit out from that second screen, but reopen the app with only the native screen active. As someone that has to jump between having a laptop screen, and having a laptop screen + second monitor, this is a frequent issue so would love this to get fixed!

It's all the lizard aliens' fault! They are among us! Didn't you know?! :D

Seriously though:
Some issues may appear only on certain Mac and MacOS constellations but not on others. C'est la vie as the French say.

I just downloaded the Designer Beta and the problems 1, 2 seems to be solved.

1. I tried quitting the application while in full screen. The application once reopened is taking the maximum available space but doesn't creep under the menu bar 👍

2. I tried opening the application after unplugging my main screen. The application window is now contained within the new smaller screen size 👍

3. So far no overlaps of the window main button with the toolbar 🤞

4. Still no luck when opening images the Mac way 😅

There was no announcement, so it won't just "automagically" fix itself. But the issue is now apparently logged. Whether it will ever be fixed remains to be seen, but given Serif's bug fixing record, I have my doubts that it's anywhere but near the bottom of their priority list… :/
