detra Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 After noticing that my finished pdf had only a single font embedded, I did some trial & error and noticed that certain effects are to blame. Or rather, most of them. The only ones that don't cause any issues, even when cranked up to the max, are Outer Glow and Outer Shadow. If I apply anything else (unless the values are set to 0 and therefore don't do anything), the font for said text won't be embedded and I can't select the text in the pdf either. The only workaround I found was to include a duplicate text layer without any effects applied, but I don't know if that will cause any visual issues during print. Quote
walt.farrell Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums. Most effects applied to vector objects will cause rasterization when exporting from the Affinity applications to PDF. This is not a bug. I'm surprised you found some that don't. detra Posted December 23, 2023 Author Posted December 23, 2023 Seems a bit useless for paperback/hardcover book cover design then, since I need effects to make them look good, but then I can't embed the required fonts to make them work correctly unless I use the workaround I mentioned. Quote
GarryP Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 What is the problem that you are trying to overcome by embedding the font? Quote
detra Posted December 23, 2023 Author Posted December 23, 2023 Amazon's KDP requires fonts to be embedded in the cover for paperback and hardcover books. Quote
GarryP Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 That seems like an unusual requirement to me. What if the entire cover was created without using any fonts? Would they reject it? Quote

Equally, it doesn't make any difference if the fonts are rasterised since they simply just form part of the image and are no longer considered to be fonts... It is interesting though that both Outer Glow and Outer Shadow remain as embedded editable fonts...
