Hi

I've taken over the editing of a u3a newlsetter & am currently using Microsoft Publisher because that's what I had on my PC. However, it's very much the poor cousin of Word & Excel & it feels like Microsoft have done nothing with it for years. There are many things that I take for granted in Word/Excel (& other programs) that just don't work in MS Publisher - no format painter for instance. Just one irritation.

A major irritation is the inability to paste a Word table. This is something that I will have to do 2 or 3 times a year & I have worked around it by using the snip tool in Windows to paste it in as an image, but that's less than ideal.

So, my question is, can a Word table be pasted into Affinity Publisher?  If so, I'll be getting a copy forthwith!

Thanks

Deb

Could you give an example of the table you want to insert?
You can insert a page of a Word document that has a table on it, but there may be editing problems.

Also you can install a trial version of Publisher and see if it works for you.

I only have Word 2 on my PC but "yes" it can paste table data

1. It can paste the table as a text frame

2. It can paste the table data into a Table object created in publisher

Formatting of cells (colours, borders) etc may not be exact but that depends on how complex your tables are so you may have to add some formatting afterwards

As advised if you provide a sample table, we can see what Publisher can do automatically or try the trial (30 day) version

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Another option is to export the table from MS Word to a PDF (or other image type) and then Place that exported item into your Publisher document as a Linked Document.

Then, when you change the MS Word table, you can export it again – using the same filename – and the linked document will auto-update in Publisher (as long as you have “Automatically update linked resources when modified externally” ticked in Settings/General).

By doing this you will also be ‘getting around’ any limitations which could be inherent in pasting complex things, such as tables, from one application into another, although any special colour management issues might still be there.

If you are only doing this two or three times a year then this shouldn’t be too much hassle.

Two recent examples of the mentioned possible 'editing problems' with tables of Word docs:

macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1

Thanks for your speedy responses. I've downloaded trial version, but have had to do that on a laptop, not my regular PC, so it's all a bit awkward, especially as I don't have MS Publisher on that machine.

Anyway, I've created text frame & tried pasting table. No good, just get text, no table. I've tried paste special as EMF. I've tried placing it, but it never comes out right. Please advise what I'm doing wrong!

Thanks - The 2 versions I've tried to put in are attached here, as both pdf & docx files
