Since switching to Designer from Illustrator last year, I now have the latest D2 and update. I have created a number of assets in the asset panel by creating a new category I named 'my assets'. I just opened a design I've been working on and was going to save it to my assets, but to my horror, all the assets I had saved over the time I've had Designer seem to have disappeared. When I select the my assets category from the dropdown menu, there is nothing there, and there isn't even the three line icon to save new assets! I have restarted my computer and tried it again to no avail. I notice also that the default assets that came with Designer are missing now too. Anybody have any ideas what is happening?

Did you never exported that "my assets" category as an "my_assets.afassets" file on your own, in order to have a backup of those?

However, look into under the app's user resources path ...

... for an "assets.propcol" file and it's file size. - If you had created most assets under a previous different ADe version then look under those versions resource path after an "assets.propcol" file (compare file sizes with other older ADe version ones) and then backup & copy that over to your updated ADe v2.2.

I found an assets file in a resources folder, but don't know what it contains and how to import to designer. I still don't understand why designer changed. That still doesn't explain why there is still no icon that I can use to save new assets, or why the default assets aren't there anymore. If those program files are what runs Designer, why aren't they showing those assets?

Have you tried doing a Control run up? Press and hold the Control key while launching Designer. You will get a Clear User Data dialog window. Clear (uncheck) all options, and select the Reset User Content Migration option, found at the bottom of the top section. Press the Clear button, and let Designer finish loading. You should get a prompt about migrating content from an earlier version. Does this get your Assets back?

What OS are you running, Mac or Windows?

Where is the Resources folder located on your system? Is the assets file a *.propcol file? In MSIX version 2 Affinity apps the propcol files are found:

%USERPROFILE%\.affinity\Common\2.0\user

That is the location for Windows systems. If you are running Windows, can you attach a screenshot of the contents of that folder. Should be a bunch of propcol files.

You don't want the one in the Resources folder, as that is a default file, not the one holding your Assets. You must find the one in the locations shown in the FAQ.

I followed the clear user data instructions and that didn't do the trick for my assets, however I recreated the category my assets which now has the icon to save assets again. I didn't save those assets in an assets file, however, I do have all the design files that contain the assets that were in my assets, so I suppose I could go into all those designs and put them back into my assets again and then save a backup file.

Here is a screen shot of my program files folders that shows where the only assets file I can find is located, on the off chance this might help restore them.

That won't help, as the files are not where the FAQ told you to look.

Are you looking for files for V1 or V2?

Under my older MacApp Store ADE v1 macOS version those are under the path ...

  • ~/Library/Containers/com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner/Data/Library/Application Support/user/

ade_assets.jpg.36ff239a073863363d8bd1c36028df95.jpg

... and according to the V2 FAQ they would be under macOS nowadays instead probably under ...

-> ~/Library/Group Containers/6LVTQB9699.com.seriflabs/v2/user/

And for WIN ADe v2 instead probably ...

Windows (2.1 onwards):

  • Affinity Store (MSIX) & Windows Store:

I have V2

Then, for Windows, the FAQ linked above tells you that the assets.propcol file you want to retrieve from a system backup is in one of these two locations, depending on which version of the application you installed:

Quote

Object Styles, Text Styles, Fills, Brushes, Tool Presets, Grid Presets, Assets & Document Presets.

These can be found in the following locations -

Windows (2.1 onwards):

  • Affinity Store (MSIX) & Windows Store:
    • %USERPROFILE%\.affinity\Common\2.0\user\

  • Affinity Store (EXE) :
    • %appdata%\Affinity\Common\2.0\user\
