Document Setup Page Dimensions Don't Update When Editing Values Manually Then Using The Tab Key When The Link Icon Is Active

I couldn't immediately find a reference to this being reported previously so apologies if it has been...

When editing the document width or height in the Document Setup dialog window, entering a new width or height value by editing an existing value isn't reflected in the opposing text entry box when the tab key is used with the link icon activated.

Editing the value a second time will then correctly update the opposing text box correctly.

Hi Hangman,

I can't seem to replicate this issue here I'm afraid please could you confirm which version of Mac OS you are using? Is this a bug you can reproduce every time or does it just happen randomly etc?

Thanks

Hi @Callum,

macOS Monterey 12.6.8, I can reproduce this every time and it appears to be unique to Publisher 2.2.0 (Retail and Beta), as in, no issues in Designer 2.2.0 or Photo 2.2.0 and no issues in Publisher 2.0.4.

Version 2 in general is awash with instances where the tab key fails to function correctly when moving between text entry boxes which I believe has been widely reported but I think this issue is slightly different.

Clicking in the document width or height text entry box in the Document Setup dialog window and adding or removing a number, e.g., manually changing 210 mm to 21 mm or to 2100 mm by clicking after the zero and either hitting the delete key or typing zero results in a loss of focus for the text entry box.

Hitting the tab key once brings the text entry box back into focus, and hitting the tab key a second time moves it to the next text entry box but it fails to update the value in the opposing text entry box despite the link icon being active.

Note: This only happens on the first instance of editing the value... e.g., changing 210 mm to 21 mm and hitting the tab key fails to update the opposing text entry but then changing 21 mm to 20 mm and hitting the tab key a second time will now update the opposing text entry value correctly.

Hi @Callum,

Thanks for your feedback...

I had already tried this both with “Use keyboard navigation to move focus between controls” enabled and disabled and it makes no difference in 2.2.0, the text entry box still loses focus if editing the width or height value manually i.e., by single mouse clicking in the width or height text entry box and subsequently still fails to update the opposing value when using the tab key.

Note: Not mouse clicking in either the width or height text entry box but simply overtyping the current value doesn't exhibit the issue and after doing so correctly updates the opposing value so the issue seems to relate specifically to a mouse click in either the width or height text entry box in the Document Setup window.

This is very specific to 2.2.0 and only relates to Publisher... just in case this helps with a resolution... Clearly, the workaround is to just overtype the value but the assumption is that it should still be possible to edit an existing value without the need to completely overtype the entire value, more so when working to six decimal places.

Many thanks for logging in the meantime...

Strange when testing this here it only occurs with that setting enabled and only on Monteray its logged now either way so should hopefully be fixed in the future :)

Strange indeed, though as you say logged for a future update... I'm not convinced that setting is the actual cause of the issue, though equally realise I could be wrong with that assumption. When you compare the behaviour between Publisher 2.0.4 and 2.2.0 with that System Preference either enabled or disabled (which for me makes zero difference) you can hopefully see the difference in behaviour, i.e.,

In 2.0.4 the width and/or height text entry boxes don't lose focus when mouse-clicking in them and as soon as you edit either the width or height the opposing entry is updated automatically without even needing to hit the tab key.

In 2.2.0 the width and/or height text entry boxes do lose focus when mouse-clicking in them and as soon as you edit either the width or height the opposing entry isn't updated even after hitting the tab key.

I see the same failing behaviour as @Hangman with 2.2.0 and Monterey 12.6.9, wether the system preference for Tab navigation is ticked or not. (I don't have previous version installed anymore to compare.)

To see it happen:

  1. Check that width and height fields are linked in Document settings
  2. Click once in the width/height field — that will select all its content: [210 mm]
  3. Click a second time in it, in the number or just after it (that is important!) — that will insert the cursor inside the field: [210| mm]
  4. Add/delete a single cypher (digit) to the present number [2100 mm or 21 mm]
  5. Press Tab
  6. The other field is not updated

— Note that on step 4., you cannot type/delete a second cypher consequently.
Instead of the second character you type, it loses focus and beeps. You have to click again in that field to continue to type in it.
This latter bug is probably not new.

Possibly related bug

Thank you to you (and others) for all the job of bug tracking you do.

This one gave me also the opportunity/courage to report one that annoyed me from my very beginnings on Affinity.
