Affinity Designer 2.2: Selection Marquee Bug.

That video has the wrong Context Toolbar for it to be done with 2.2, from what I can see.

With the Move Tool active it should also have an Auto-Select field, with a check-mark and a pull-down. And how the intersecting marquee works will depend on the settings of that field, I think.

Perhaps you could show us your screen? At least a screenshot, or perhaps a similar recording.

On Win10 with designer v2.2.1    In a document I can select with simple clicking a Png, frame text, a group of curves, but NOT not frame text "masked" with a png (when the  png is dropped  on the text layer thumbnail without rasterizing to mask first).   When the PNG  is rasterized as mask first and then dropped on the text layer thumbnail, the mask effect differs and the move tool "auto select" works as expected. Also when the PNG is dropped the text layer name (not on the layer thumbnail) the "mask effect" differs again and the move tool "auto select" works fine.

I apologize for presumably using "mask", "masked" and "mask effect" wrong.
