Hi all, I'm slowly getting to grips with Affinity Designer.

I am having trouble with text boxes - both Artistic Text tool and the Frame Text tool. Any time I create text, there is a background fill. I have gone to the character menu to turn it off, however it persists. Please see the first attached screenshot - I can't get rid of the blue background! When I try to change the background colour (e.g. to red), I get the result in the second image - with a bit of the blue sticking out. So I'm not sure what's causing this!

I never had this problem before with text, so no idea what's brought it on. I have quit the app and restarted it, but the issue persists.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

That sometimes happens after pasting text in from an external source, such as a web page.

In Publisher you would be able to resolve this using the Text Frame panel, but Designer does not have that panel available. Instead, try this:

  1. Select that text object/layer.
  2. From the menu, Edit > Defaults > Revert, followed by Edit > Defaults > Save.
  3. That should fix the frame background, but you will then need to respecify the font, font size, etc.

Thanks for the welcome, and for the advice. I did not paste any text, the problem happened when I created a text box and just typed. So must be a bug causing the problem.

The steps you provided worked, thanks for that!

Just posting here for the record that the issue continues to happen to me, even after having reverted textbox defaults. Just wanted to make it known that this is a repeated issue for me. Not sure where is the best place to report this.

Did you also do the Save, after the Revert?

Can you provide a screen recording of this happening in a new document?

Is this a new behaviour in V2? – I am used in V1 that if "Revert" does reset an object style successfully as wanted than this resulting/expected style is currently/already saved as Defaults.

Whereas if "Revert" does not reset a currently occurring object style to the expected default appearance than the object needs to get reset (restyled) manually first and then "Save" is required.
