Copy / Duplicate anomaly

Recommended Posts

I'm occasionally having an issue whereupon a curve/ object I have selected is unable to be copied. Keystroke (Command C) produces an error sound, the Edit menu is mostly greyed out, except Duplicate. I have to manually click on another object in a different parent layer then back in order for the copy ability to be re-enabled. For some reason clicking on items in the same parent Layer doesn't help.

I've checked it's not that I have anything other than the Move tool selected while trying, as I'm still having terrible trouble with the correct mouse-over icons appearing.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Strange how things happen... ok, further to above, I've just noticed it's happening when I'm switching to other applications and back. In case it makes any difference Designer v2 is in Fullscreen mode whereas my other apps aren't.

Hi @Ash Eldritch,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble!

I have been trying to replicate this issue but have thus far been unable - can you please provide a screen recording showing the steps you're taking when this occurs?

If you're unsure how to take a screen recording, please check out our FAQ linked below -

Many thanks in advance :)

Hi Dan, Since that post I've narrowed it down, but not to the cause. It's simply switching to other applications, or the finder, that causes it.

And to get the menu options back I have to click on the tool bar again.

This only happens while using Designer in Fullscreen mode.

Also, I've tested this in Photo (being in fullscreen mode) and it's not happening on that.

I've included a screen recording. Hope it helps.

Many thanks for providing that for me - that's certainly interesting behaviour!

Myself and my colleagues have tested this workflow here, though we're not seeing the same result currently.

Can you please confirm for me:

  • What version of macOS are you running?
  • What exact keyboard shortcut do you use to switch to Finder, and then back to Affinity Designer?
  • Do you have any 'Window Manager' style applications running in the background, that may be affecting this?

Thanks once again!

Just in case, I would also ask if there are any "copy-paste" helper applications running ?

Hi,

I'm Running Mac 13.4.1 on a new Mac M2.

To switch apps I use Command Tab. (I only used the Menu and Toolbar in the screen recording for the example. usually I solely rely on keyboard shortcuts. Hence why it took me a while to realise the menu options were missing.

I had Magnet Running. But I just disabled it starting at login and restarted the system without it and it's still happening.

The only other things I use at Login are:

Karabiner Elements to gain another Keystroke set for Designer. Also disabled with no change to the issue.

Alfred. Again, disabled with same issue.

LogiOptions+. Uninstalled and same issue.

Typinator. Again, have disabled and same issue.

Others things I’ve thought of but have been able to dismiss are Mac’s Screen Zoom and Hover Text.

Other than those I can't think of anything I'm running. I am now wondering if this is also what's causing my mouseover issues since the focus doesn't seem to be on the page. Which might account for the mouse icon not knowing what state it's meant to be in.

Thanks for confirming that for me! A colleague of mine running macOS 13.4.1 has since been able to replicate this behaviour - therefore I'm getting it logged with our developers now.

I'll be sure to include the information above, as it may help our team resolve the issue in a future update.

I hope this helps :)

FWIW, I can reproduce this in V1. Like the OP for fullscreen mode only and for AD but not APh. – Apart from macOS mission control desktops, Alfred and LogiOptions I use FlyCut (copy/paste text) but quitting the latter didn't change. Different to the OP I have APub and AD using the same desktop. – A click on the object brings the menu back, clicking the pasteboard or an UI panel isn't sufficient.

  • 3 weeks later...

The latest update (which has some great new features) seems to have solved part of this issue. Items are now able to be copied after switching to another app and back. However the mouse-over issue, for me, is still a problem.

Same as before this happens when switching to another application then back.

1. I had the pen tool selected when switching out.

2. Upon switching back I press "v" to select the move tool and the toolbar and info panel, at the bottom, all show this change has happened yet, as you can see in the screenshot, the icon  remains showing the pen tool's image.

3. I have to interact with something before the icon will correct itself.

regards, Ash

Thanks for letting me know Ash & I'm sorry to hear this is yet to be addressed.

I've updated the development log with the steps provided here, and 'bumped' the issue including the latest version number to bring it to our devs attention again.

I hope this helps :)

I'm not sure how but this problem is back. I'm having the exact same issue as before. The inability to copy/paste etc and the menu greyed out after simply switching to another app and back.

The only thing that has changed on my system is a Safari update I installed yesterday.

This issue is still logged with our development team as yet to be resolved internally, so I'm more surprised to hear that the issue was temporarily fixed and has now returned!

I'm unsure why this would have been working correctly for you, but I can confirm that as the issue still remains 'Open', I would expect this issue to continue to occur, my apologies.

However our team are working to resolve this and we hope to have it fixed in an upcoming update. I hope this helps :)
