How can I select and save a colour from an image?

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the noobish question.
I'd like to select a colour from an image, and have that color saved so that I can use it.

I'm familiar with other design tools which use a colorpicker. But the colorpicker in designer seems to work differently.

In designer, if I select the colorpicker tool and then select a pixel in an image, the image is transformed. All the colors in that image change.

I'd like to select a color without transforming the image.

How can I do this?

Hi bobdobbs,

When you select a color, it will go to that little circle that I highlighted in my image. As you've noticed, if you click the color, it will be applied to the selected object's fill (or stroke if that is selected). While this is usually not what you want for raster images, it is quite handy for vector shapes. If you want to set the color the fill (or stroke) without affecting the current object, first click off of the object (ex: the image) so it is deselected.

If you do not have any layer selected then the Colour Picker Tool fills the picked colour on click into the colour wells in the Tools, the Swatches and the Colours panel. Then you can create a swatch from it in the Swatches panel.

The Colour Picker Tool always picks in the document colour space / profile only. So you might want to change the colour mode in the Colours panel (with the lock deactivated) before you create a swatch of the picked colour.

When working with image layers and using the Colour Picker Tool from the Tools Panel untick the option "Apply to Selection" in the context toolbar to prevent the colours changing.

Alternatively, rasterising the image layer will also prevent the image colours changing
