Photo crashes after using Fill Layer then History reset

Recommended Posts

Photo 2.1.1.1847 crashed after adding and editing a Fill layer then resetting history. Details:

  • What is your operating system and version (Windows 11, OSX Ventura, iOS 16 etc)?
    • Windows 11 Home 22H2 22621.1848 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22642.1000.0
    • Acer Aspire A515-45, AMD Ryzen 7 5700U with Radeon Graphics 1.80 GHz
  • Is hardware acceleration (in Preferences > Performance) ON or OFF ? (and have you tried the other setting?)
    • Off, where it stays. I suspect the AMD GPU driver may be less than ideal, since I've gotten near-identical crashes from separate apps with it on. So it stays off.
  • What happened for you (and what you expected to happen)
    • I was experimenting to find a procedure for somehow adding an editable Exposure gradient to a layer mask. I had not added an adjustment layer yet, however -- I was just playing with a gradient Fill Layer. Then Photo vanished. This happened twice within 10 minutes on two different images, after doing the same basic things. I tried to nail down the exact sequence, but was unable. It varied slightly between the two previous instances anyway but the above steps were common to both at one time or another.
  • Provide a recipe for creating the problem (step-by-step what you did).
    • New Fill Layer
    • Set fill to Linear gradient
    • Set colors
    • Adjust gradient direction, angle, mid-point, etc.
    • Adjust layer blend mode, opacity, etc. and other details for a while, back and forth.
    • Reset the History completely (crash)
  • Screenshots (very handy) or a screen capture/video.
    • You mean of my desktop with Photo not there?  😄
  • Any unusual hardware (like tablets or external monitors or drives that may affect things) or relevant other applications like font managers or display managers.
    • A Wacom Intuos S (Ctl-4100) is USB-attached but was not being used.
    • I'm using an HDMI Philips external monitor but nothing unusual there.
    • I have an external USB backup drive on the computer, but was not in use.
  • Did this same thing used to work and if so have you changed anything recently? (software or hardware)
    • Can't say for sure since I've not used Fill Layers much at all up to now.
    • No changes

From the crash reports the issue this being caused when the screen re-renders, can you please try changing the Retina Rendering to Low Quality (fastest) in the Affinity Photo settings, also if your external monitor has HDR support please try turning this off and let me know if you are still getting the crash

I've changed this but please note I'm on Windows, not a Mac nor iPad. Also my monitor is just a bog standard Philips 2k 1920x1080 sRGB monitor, not HDR, etc. But I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if it happens again.

Thanks.

Just crashed again. I was again experimenting with a Fill layer, reset the history stack back to the beginning and Photo vanished. Crash dump is attached.
