I think you accidentally chose Italic for Replace and not Find

Well spotted, now I don't feel left out and can replicate the issue... 😎

A completely separate issue.

I recently reported a bug with the Style Picker tool which is caused by Publisher acting differently if text had been selected or the insertion point placed before choosing the Move tool, and the same bug happens with Find.

Using the same test doc as I shared for the previous issue:

story.afpub

  1. Select the Text tool and place the insertion point in the first frame on page 2
  2. Select the Move tool and choose Find, searching the Story for the word "test". You will be switched back to the Text tool and 2 results will be shown which is correct.
  3. Now click on the page once (still with the Text tool) before selecting the Move tool again. The appearance of Publisher will be identical to what it was when you selected the Move tool in #2. Choose Find and search the Story for the word "test". You will be switched back to the Text tool and 10 results will be shown.

IMO whether or not text was selected or the insertion point placed in a text frame before switching to the Move tool should have no impact on subsequent use of Find, Style Picker, or anything else. When the Move tool is selected, the frame is selected and not the text in it.

In addition to the issue mentioned above when searching using Story as the Scope where the search result multiplies the number of instances of the found term by the number of paragraphs in the search scope giving the incorrect result, the Selection scope also gives incorrect results, mirroring Story.

An issue raised in this thread ("Scope of Story for Find Operation gives incorrect results, selecting all text rather than restricting to Italic") has now been reported to the developers by the testing team (Ref: AFB-8166). Thank you very much for reporting this issue to us.

It would be a really great addition to have the page number added to the search results in the Find and Replace panel in a similar vein to the Cross-Reference panel... I appreciate we now have scope options but this isn't always sufficient when there are lots of references to the same search term...
