I'm using Affinity Designer 2.1 on MacOs desktop.

As I build up my illustration, I create new layers.
Over time it has made sense to organise layers into groups.

I'm going back and forth between groups and subgroups of layers.

At the moment when I create a new layer, the layer appears at the very top of the stack: above all existing layers and layer groups.

This is very frustrating, and interferes with my flow.
In order to put the newly-created layer in it's correct place, I have to hunt around for the right group, the right subgroup and the right position.

Ideally I'd like to create new layers immediately adjacent to the currently selected layer, or at least within the currently selected layer group.

Can this behaviour be configured?

What kind of layer are you taking about? Can you give she specific examples that aren't behaving like you want?

Everything is a layer, but some kinds of layers have different characteristics and behaviors.

Hi Walt.

Yeah, there are definitely some things about layers that I don't get yet.

In this context I mean pixel layers:
In order to create a new pixel layer, I'm going to the small toolbar at the bottom of the layers panel and clicking on the icon for creating a new layer.

For adjustment & mask layers, see therefor in the Online Help ...

... Assistant options

  • Adding adjustment layer to selection—In Pixel Persona, if you've created a selection, any adjustment applied to the selection can be added as a new adjustment layer or made a child adjustment layer in the current layer.
  • Adding mask layer to selection—Analogous to 'Adding adjustment layer to selection' above, but for mask layers.

If you already have a Group layer with at least 1 layer in it, if you select that layer before clicking the Add Pixel Layer button. the new pixel layer should be added to that Group layer just above the one you has selected.

Does that not work for you?
