Hangman Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 Question When placing a document exported as a pdf file from any of the Affinity apps that uses a mix of ligatures (fi, ffi, ff, fl, ffl) and discretionary ligatures for a particular font into Publisher, when viewed using PDF Interpret with the relevant fonts installed, is there any practical or logical reason why the discretionary ligatures don't display correctly? Assumption is that they should display correctly… Caslon Pro | The Discretionary Ligatures (ct, st) are Simply Ignored Lato | The Discretionary Ligatures (ct, ch, st, ti, tt) are Displayed Incorrectly Quote Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 Affinity Designer Beta 2.6.0.3027 | Affinity Photo Beta 2.6.0.3027 | Affinity Publisher Beta 2.6.0.3027 MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
walt.farrell Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 Make sure when you Export the PDF from your Affinity application that you do not subset the fonts. The setting is near the bottom of the advanced Export settings. Thanks Walt, that didn't even cross my mind... So, that appears to work for the Lato discrectionary ligatures though not for the Caslon Pro ones, namely, ct and st, which while described as discrectionary ligatures under the typography panel are still ignored when shown as Interpreted pdf files in Publisher... There also appears to be an issue in v2 switching from Passthrough to Interpet back to Passthrough in as much as Passthrough to Interpet is fine but Interpet back to Passthrough does not revert back to the Passthrough state. This works correctly in v1. walt.farrell 1 Quote Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 Affinity Designer Beta 2.6.0.3027 | Affinity Photo Beta 2.6.0.3027 | Affinity Publisher Beta 2.6.0.3027 MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
Staff NathanC Posted May 26, 2023 Staff Posted May 26, 2023 Hi @Hangman, I can't think of a reason why the discretionary ligatures are not being rendered when a placed PDF is changed to interpret with the Caslon Pro font, I'll be getting this logged with the developers for further investigation, if I hear anything back I'll let you know. 10 hours ago, Hangman said: There also appears to be an issue in v2 switching from Passthrough to Interpet back to Passthrough in as much as Passthrough to Interpet is fine but Interpet back to Passthrough does not revert back to the Passthrough state. This works correctly in v1. Just tried this on my Mac and Windows machines, changing back to passthrough to interpret is changing my ligatures back to being shown. Could I take a look at the PDF/afpub file with the PDF you had this issue with? Quote
Hangman Posted May 26, 2023 Author Posted May 26, 2023 Hi @NathanC, Of course, no problem at all... I've attached two, two page Publisher files with embedded pdf's, a v1.10.6 and a v2.1.0 file. I've also attached the pdf files as well created in Designer 2.1.0. There is a known issue with placed pdf's in 2.1.0 where Publisher is becoming non-responsive, but I'm unsure if it is related to what I'm seeing here because Publisher is still responsive just not switching back from Interpret to Passthrough... This is what I'm seeing with the first page using Caslon Pro Bold... Many thanks! QA have since confirmed this as a bug, so this should be fixed when the issue with discretionary ligatures is resolved. 🙂 Quote
