Apple RAW from iPhone 14

Recommended Posts

Hullo everyone. I've been developing RAW files for a long time and when I came to process some piccies from my swanky new phone I found the results were pretty awful. Having looked through the forums I find I can switch the Raw 'engine' from Serif's own to 'Apple Core Image RAW' However, this does not appear in the dropdown wher it's supposed to reside. ie "Preferences> Assistant> Develop Assistant". Transferring over to my Mac, I find the Apple raw engine is there and gives very nice results, however, I do all of my photo processing on a rather powerful PC because the mac is not high spec. So, How do I get the Apple Raw converter into my PC? Or something that emulates it? Ta muchly.

Kind regards, Steve

AFAIK, you can't, since it is a proprietary 'engine' owned by Apple.

As far as I am aware the only RAW Codec Apple do for windows is the Apple ProRes RAW but only Adobe apps are compatible and it's video anyway.

Cannot Serif create a raw profile which mimics the characteristics, giving us a good starting place? Serif's own RAW engine does a good job on everything else but the Apple files seem to open all crushed down at the dark end of the scale and when stretching it up, it won't distribute evenly across the whole histogram. The reults are dreadful. I can't use the Mac as it's not got the steam power to cope with the large files. Ta

Note that Serif's engine is based on LibRAW snapshot 0.21 (with additional support for Canon CR3 code) so very little of it is anything Serif actually developed in house.

So the short answer is yes, they probably could but probably won't, instead waiting for a newer LibRaw snapshot that supports the latest Apple iPhone models.

Can I formally ask for support for these RAW files please. Windows preview does a perfect job of rendering a completely balanced picture from them, a very old copy of Photoshop 6 using Adobe RAW 7 does a fine job. I love this suite of programs and I use them endlessly, there must be a simple answer, surely? Is LibRaw something that's updated frequently do we think? Have you seen how capable the main camera on the 14 pro is. I know it's not SLR quality but it shouldn't be dismissed out of hand. Logic says I should be able to create a complex curve to compensate but try as I might, I can't get satisfactory results. Thanks for reading.

Yes, but since Serif is not developing LibRAW in house, you will need to ask its developers, not Serif's, for support. Also note what has already been mentioned in several topics about some apps displaying the JPEG preview in the RAW file, rather than actually trying to develop it.
