RM f/g Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 Sometimes I have to abort exporting to pdf from a book. So I click the Abort button under the export progress bar. The bar disappears, but it looks as if it's still active somehow. All menu items are greyed out, so the only option then is to force quit the application. MikeTO Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 Hi, I'm unable to duplicate this issue on Ventura. Does this happen every time you export a Book and cancel the progress meter? Can you try exporting the largest chapter and cancelling that export? Does the same issue occur? RM f/g Posted May 12, 2023 Author Posted May 12, 2023 Hey Mike I tried and there's no problem when I cancel export when the bar is still progressing. Until now I only canceled export when the progress bar had stopped and cpu-load had dropped to about one percent for a while. I'm still trying to find out why the application hangs while exporting. In one instance it had to do with Publisher wanting to rasterise a (part of a) vector drawing, placed – linked – in one of the chapters. Export stopped at 17 percent.* In Publisher the cause of problems is often (in) a linked file. So I looked at a placed file at around page 40 in the 238 page book and found a vector drawing with one layer to be rasterised on export. After changing the layer's cropping to clipping it exported without rasterising and export from the book panel didn't hang there anymore. Now it hangs at 78 percent. Don't know yet what the problem here is. Exporting from the separate chapter files, not via the book panel, happenes without problem. * In the Export window, when you have the patience to wait for the preview being generated, you can see the Estimated File Size being calculated: a percentage gradually growing. If this calculation stops at a certain percentage, this is where the progess bar will stop as well. MikeTO Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 Oh, I thought you were cancelling the export because you didn't want to continue, not because the app appeared to hang. I'll have to leave this to somebody else as I've never had it hang while exporting. Staff Gabe Posted May 15, 2023 Staff Posted May 15, 2023 Are these hangs reproducible? Or random? Quote
RM f/g Posted May 22, 2023 Author Posted May 22, 2023 On 5/15/2023 at 3:00 PM, Gabe said: Are these hangs reproducible? Or random? These hangs are reproducible. They occurred at the same place every time in this book (236 pages in 14 chapters). Breaking the link to the folder with the placed files (afdesign, pdf, tiff, jpg) results in export without hangs. Exporting to pdf from the opened chapter files themselves (not from the book panel) with files linked works without problem. Embedding the linked files makes no difference. What happens is that the CPU load drops from several hundreds to a few percent. After minutes I cancel. Trying to quit (Save changes to book? > No) puts Publisher in the Beach Ball Mode. First hang occurred at 17%. I found a linked afdesign file (vectors only) a part of which Designer rasterised on export. I fixed that and then export of the Publisher book progressed to 77%. I checked and found a second linked afdesign file (vectors only) a part of which Designer rasterised on export. I fixed that as well and the complete book was exported to pdf. Once. Now it hangs again at 77%, while nothing changed in the book or chapter files. I suspect it has to do with a placed file again. There’s one chapter/file not closing completely every time (save > close > file disappears from app window > beach ball > force quit > restart > close – or close > beach ball again). This file does close normally with the link to the folder with linked files broken. Haven’t found the culprit yet. So, for the time being I export from the separate chapter files and combine the pdfs in PDF Studio. Thanks for your attention.
