I am trying to create a style of a red background with black dots within a rectangle that I can export as a png,  then bring in as a bitmap as a gradient fill to save as a style, sadly I cannot seem to achieve a seamless effect within the created style.  Any suggestions would be most helpful.  I hope I have explained the situation ok.  Cheers John

Define seamless here and maybe show some screenshots of what the expected seamless result should look like. - When you created a bitmap style out of your rect with black dots, style size and the setup gradient bitmap handle orientation plays a role here, also when reusing that style on some shape objects. You always have to adjust it accordingly (handles) when you reuse the style.

Hi

Create a seamless pattern using a container rectangle for the dots. Then you can also make use of the asset to fill and scaling options

A bit vague...Sorry!

I worked on some of these as grunge comic overlays. The originals are on artboard 01. I just recoloured the base container to red. Export as PNG.

In the assets are the 4 files. Just drag the asset to the fill swatch on the context bar and rescale using fill tool on selected rectangle on artboard 3

The containing rectangle controls the scale | seamless; The pattern the effect...good for vintage comic overlays. The originals are here

Make the PNG template pattern you use for the style huge enough dependent on the max sizes you need, so that there will be no repeating for common used shape sizes. For example 2400 x 2400 px or the like ...

BTW one of the easiest ways to setup, generate and build custom reusable patterns is the SVG route, which you can then reuse in Affinity apps and of course also save as bitmaps for building styles. - See therefor ...
